Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 03/12/2014

» With holiday season approaching, decorations are now turning malls and shopping areas into winter wonderlands, signalling a time of gift-giving. Some of us may want to give to friends and family, but others may use an end-of-year bonus to update their own hardware.

iPad Air 2 - arrival and news

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 19/11/2014

» It has been a busy two weeks at eXtensions. Last Thursday the iPhone 6; this Friday the iPad Air 2. This week I have a massive dent in my credit card, but I did finish writing my A-Z of System Preferences in OS X 10.10, Yosemite. The files are on my site, of course, or you can download the whole thing as a single web page or a large PDF file from www.extensions.in.th/amitiae/2014/prefs/system_a-z.html.

Read before you agree, buy or update

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 12/11/2014

» My new iPhone 6 arrived last Thursday instead of the Friday Apple had indicated. I  waited until I arrived home to set it up from the iCloud backup. The transfer took about 15 minutes, but then some apps also had to be downloaded. After that was done, I synchronised music and photographs using USB. The job was finished just after midnight.

Yosemite's in town, ya varmint!

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 29/10/2014

» Later this week, local users will be able to start ordering iPhone 6 models, although it is rumoured that initially those in some iStudio outlets will only have True Sim cards. I will wait until I can physically hold the two models before making a decision and then order from the online Apple Store. My iPhone 5s is fine for now.

Camera apps now using manual controls on iOS 8

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 08/10/2014

» Even though Apple updated iOS 8 to version 8.0.2 there are still problems, especially concerning Bluetooth, with many users reporting connection difficulties for in-car entertainment systems. No doubt Apple is aware and is under pressure to fix these problems, hopefully before the iOS 8.1 update due later this month, which may also signal the release of OS X, 10.10 Yosemite.

» Around 15 years ago, Somtow Sucharitkul made a promise to Princess Galyani Vadhana that he would endeavour to conduct all of the Mahler symphonies in Bangkok. He now has only Mahler's Symphony No. 2 left to perform. The last work put on at the Thailand Cultural Centre was Symphony Of A Thousand: The Eighth Symphony.

It's Apple's Week!

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 17/09/2014

» I had made plans to watch the broadcast of last week's Apple event, which started at midnight Thailand time. The live feed was abysmal, with several breaks, making it hard to follow. Disruptions occurred both with the web feed and Apple TV; this frustrated users in several countries, so it was not a local bandwidth problem. At the time of writing, Apple has neither explained the poor video quality nor apologised.

» Last week, the Apple video Misunderstood won a Creative Arts Emmy Award. The advertisement features an apparently-dysfunctional teen who is more engaged with the family than first seems when it appeared last year.

Transferring photos to Macs, iOS devices from iPhone and DSLR cameras

Life, Graham K. Rogers, Published on 20/08/2014

» At a recent camp for students I ran at Mahidol University's Faculty of Engineering, a whole day was set aside for photography. After being taught some theory, the students walked round the Salaya campus taking pictures. After lunch, they were to import the images to MacBook Air computers and create slide shows using iPhoto.
