Aperture 3 (1): A Dubious First Day

» Aperture 3, a long-awaited update, was released in early February with over 200 additional features. Aperture 2 had begun to creak and this worsened after the Snow Leopard update last year: a 32-bit application for professional photographers on a 64-bit operating system. As soon as the online store for Thailand was back online, I ordered my update, which arrived at my office on Monday morning. The update was 3,690 baht instead of 7,290 baht for the full version. After lunch, I opened the box.

» I usually write the eXtensions column on a Sunday. Before starting this week's offering, I restarted my MacBook Pro. Again. The replacement computer is on order, but as I want a larger hard disk than standard, there is a waiting period. Ordering directly from Apple's online shop takes a week, but I prefer to support local businesses, who have invested into building the market here over the last few years. I am prepared for the delay.

» In some ways I was disappointed by Apple's latest creation, the iPad, which at first glance looked to me like an iPod on steroids, but perhaps because it was just what I was expecting _ at least on the outside. But Apple have ambitious technical goals and more features will become available.

» This is a busy week for people following Apple. If you are reading this column on Wednesday, Jan 27, early yesterday Thai time Apple's First Quarter financial results were announced. This was expected to be another good quarter, following high sales over the New Year period: some reports showed a 31 percent increase over the previous year.

» I am always trying to expand my use of the iPhone, adding to its original design ideas with use of apps: technical evolution, not revolution. The iPhone allows us to use new types of media, for example: traditional media like newspapers and books are declining.
