» Greetings to all readers who celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or any other festival, including New year. When hunting for gifts, I try and make things easy by selecting a few possibilities, thinking about it at home, then rushing to the stores at the last minute.

» Apple announced its 2015 App Awards last week, and Periscope is the top iPhone app. There was also a local list and the top local iPhone app was Enlight. Simple Machines was the top app for the iPad. I have both and am not surprised they were award winners.

» I was told last weekend about an Apple replacement programme for the iPhone 6 Plus (not the latest 6s Plus). A small number of these iPhones have a component that may fail causing photos to look blurry. The lens floats in a magnetic field, allowing it (normally) to have a rapid auto-focus capability. There is speculation that this might be the root of this rare problem.

» The iPad Pro is expected to be released on Friday, but there is no official date for its arrival in Thailand. Like the Apple TV, I expect users will have to wait a little longer for this and the Apple Pencil that will arrive then, too.

» Next Tuesday, Oct 27, Apple will announce its fiscal 4th quarter earnings at 2pm Cupertino Time (5pm New York). That is 4am here on Wednesday (9pm GMT +7). After the announcements, there is always a question and answer session in which Tim Cook and Luca Maestri do their best to fend off questions about future products. I expect there will be questions about the Apple Car, which may or may not exist. There will be a live audio webcast of the event at investor.apple.com.

» Now that OS X has been updated to El Capitan (version 10.11) I have been indulging myself with the new extensions for Photos that I mentioned last week. This means expanding the functions of the operating system or applications that were used on Mac OS -- before OS X. I already have a number of extensions, most are from Apple, but a few have arrived from third party sources. These are all shown in System Preferences -- Extensions, in the following panels available: All, Actions, Finder, Photos, Share Menu and Today.

» Last Wednesday, not only was there the expected update to OS X, with El Capitan, but version 9.0.2 of iOS 9 was also released and my iOS devices were updated quickly. The first download of El Capitan for my MacBook Pro failed and I had to start again. I also downloaded an update for the MacBook. I left the downloads running and when I came back from lunch, they were ready to roll. I installed the new OS X on two machines at the same time and both were good.

» In a few hours time, Apple will announce several new products at its event at the Bill Graham Center in San Francisco. Although many commentators have already given us their authoritative ideas on what will be announced, only Apple knows.

» Apple will hold a major event on Sept 9 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, San Francisco. It is expected that, whatever name or number they give it, Apple will announce the next iPhone and other products.

» I haven’t worn a wristwatch for over 20 years, so the idea of the Apple Watch did not initially gel with me. I use an iPhone and a pocket watch. I did weaken however when I saw some technical specifications.
