Nuan is the cat's whiskers at Apec

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/11/2022

» The most important news emerging from the Apec summit in Bangkok is that it looks like Downing Street's Larry the Cat has finally got some competition in the ranks of feline celebrities. Catching the eye in the Big Mango this week has been Nuan -- a lady cat who has been adopted as the unofficial mascot for the Apec meet.

Foreign noses always good for a laugh

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/12/2021

» Today's column is coming from the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum to where I periodically escape for a break from Bangkok. There was a quick reminder that I was no longer in the Big Mango while sitting in a village restaurant with my wife and friends. A Thai lad about 5 years old came up to our table and stared at me for a bit and giggled. I might add this is not an unusual reaction to Crutch in the provinces.

It could be fun, in a strange sort of way

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/01/2021

» A number of readers -- well, three -- have asked why last week's column did not contain the usual predictions for the coming year. My feeling at the time was that with the dark cloud of Covid-19 hovering over us it seemed a bit inappropriate to carry the usual frivolous PostScript predictions. However, I have had a change of heart and considering we are only 10 days into the New Year it is not too late to make silly forecasts.

When the president said 'sock it to me'

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 04/08/2019

» My apologies for unwittingly being the purveyor of fake news in last week's column, mistakenly crediting Goldie Hawn with the "sock it to me" catchphrase from the Laugh-In show. It was actually the English actress Judy Carne who was the regular "sock it to me" girl, although Hawn did also come out with the expression on occasions.

US president who loved the Big Mango

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/07/2019

» Last week it was the moon landing, today it's another 50th anniversary, US President Richard Nixon visiting Thailand. Just a week after congratulating the US astronauts on the lunar triumph, Mr and Mrs Nixon landed in Bangkok on July 28, 1969, on their way to embattled South Vietnam.

Hot and more than just a little bothered

Taking time out at the Thai Stonehenge

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/06/2015

» This time last week I was strolling around what is known as the “Stonehenge of Thailand” — and I’m not talking about the abandoned piles of the ill-fated Hopewell project on Phahon Yothin Road. Moh Hin Khao (the Hill of White Rocks) is located in Chaiyaphum, just north of the provincial town.

When the price isn’t quite right

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/04/2015

» If anything is going to upset visitors to Thailand, it is the double-standard pricing at tourist spots. It is a system that is not easy to defend and prompts many lively letters to our PostBag section from irate foreigners. However, one suspects things are unlikely to change.

That was one of the great shows, that was

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 08/09/2013

» It was sad to learn of the passing of British TV broadcaster Sir David Frost, 74, last week. Although he became internationally known through his interviews with former US President Richard Nixon in 1977, I will always remember him for his early work on the breakthrough BBC satirical show That Was The Week That Was, aka TW3.

Pillars of hope and despair

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/02/2013

» Reports that the long abandoned pillars of the ill-fated Hopewell project will finally be put out of their misery mark the end of an era.
