» When entering the exhibition "City Adaptation Lab!" at Bangkok Art & Culture Centre (BACC), visitors cannot miss the sculpture Rok-Ra-Bat (Pandemic) by Kaninyan Chandrasma. It is a broken tube sitting on a tall pedestal. According to the description, one small silver dot breaks out from the broken tube and multiplies into numerous silver dots which resemble a pandemic spreading around the world. If visitors take a closer look at the silver dots, they will see their reflections in each. This raises the question if the origin of the pandemic is people.

» Choreographer Jitti Chompee's ongoing khon project, which includes Melancholy Of Demon, a dance performance that I reviewed earlier this month, is supported by the Ministry of Culture and departments and offices under its umbrella. This is a surprising level of governmental support granted to a contemporary dance artist who wants to do not-so-genteel things with khon and the character of Tossakan. I still remember how in 2006 the Ministry of Culture reportedly forced Somtow Sucharitkul to change the scene in his opera Ayodhya that depicted the death of Tossakan (Ravan in the opera version) onstage, a practice that is considered a bad omen in Thailand.

» To honour International Women's Day, SAC Gallery have introduced four female emerging artists in "Herspective". The exhibition, on display at the Rosewood Bangkok reflects the converse side of womanhood through the artworks of Thidarat Chantachua, Praiya Ketkool, Thanathorn Suppakijjumnong and Aor Suthiprapha. If "perspective" means "perceptions" to other things in a natural understanding, "Herspective" tells a different "spective" through the talent and uniqueness of four "hers".

» In 19th-century Paris, art didn't equate to freedom of expression. There were standards for traditional French paintings stipulated by the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Artists who wanted to participate in the official art exhibition titled "The Salon" arranged by the academy had to follow its aesthetic stipulations such as using historical subjects or religious themes.

» The judiciary is the least studied element of the Thai polity. That did not matter much 25 years ago because it played almost no political role. But now the courts bring down governments, exile leaders, dissolve political parties, punish protesters and jail people for thought crimes. This book is long awaited and does not disappoint.

This busy schedule led to meeting singer Nichaphat "Praewa" Chatchaipholrat, who soon after tested positive for Covid-19. Though a test confirmed that Wanyai did not contract the virus, he had to undergo a second test soon after taking a photograph with a fan who later posted online about her positive test result.
