Malls can wait

Oped, Postbag, Published on 24/04/2020

» The mall operators are the same moguls who want to help the government. It is the right time for the government to think and act in new ways as Thai society passes through the turmoil caused by Covid-19. Starting next month, the focus should be on four key issues, not on opening the malls. They are: How to prevent the current stage of the virus from reaching a next-stage outbreak; how to help poor people affected by the Covid crisis; how to reform immigration laws to attract foreign investment and prevent our image from deteriorating; and how to reform education and integrate online learning at all levels. Surprisingly, online businesses are thriving, hence malls can wait. It is high time to bring structural reforms in commerce, immigration and education.

Torpedo the sub plan

News, Postbag, Published on 01/04/2017

» I think I have a permanent pain in the neck from years of shaking my head over the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) and its quest for submarines. As a military man I am familiar with high-ranking officers and their obsession for certain equipment, an obsession often not matching real mission requirements. The RTN is out to purchase Chinese Type 041 submarines. The Type 041 is a diesel electric sub, about 254 feet long, about 3,600 tonnes, and has a normal crew of 38. The armament is six torpedo tubes firing torpedoes, and possibly anti-ship missiles.

Some logic at last

News, Postbag, Published on 01/10/2016

» Your Sept 29 front-page article, "PM aims for 'developed nation' status", is very timely and significant. It mentions some, but not all, of the factors that are presently inhibiting Thailand's further development. Having moved successfully from "less developed" to "middle income" level, the country is stubbornly refusing to make the second jump to "fully developed" status. Thailand is well and truly caught in what is called the "middle income trap".
