I'm with the band -- how music made me British

News, Published on 31/08/2024

» 'Wonderwall' is all I remember. The rest of Oasis is a blur to me. I was still living in New York City when the band had their global breakthrough -- and that song was everywhere. From the album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, it's one of the few mid-1990s songs whose lyrics this Boomer can remember. I admired its Beatles-like off-kilter poetics, its love-will-save-the-day (if not, maybe it'll just save me) sentimentality. And Liam Gallagher's voice, while not beautiful, was pure plaintive Britpop, a plangent inflexion echoing from as far back as 1962's Love Me Do by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Cues from Iran on who to vote for

News, Marc Champion, Published on 03/07/2024

» The opposition just won a first round of elections, forcing a runoff in which everything depends on where third-party votes go. No, not in France -- in Iran. You could be forgiven for missing it amid all the excitement over the advance of the French hard right, President Joe Biden's car crash debate in the US and the coming immolation of the UK's Conservative Party. Yet Iran's experience is worth attention, not least as a reminder of what to vote for and why. Iran, to recap, is having a snap contest to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a May helicopter crash. Raisi was also being groomed to succeed the 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as supreme leader, the unelected post that -- as the title suggests -- matters most in the Islamic Republic.

If Prigozhin's gone, long live Putin – and Wagner?

News, Published on 26/08/2023

» Yevgeny Prigozhin might have retired in peace some day. Or he could have been found writhing in the throes of Novichok, a nerve agent favoured by Russia's spy agencies. He might also have fallen out of a window, crashed in his car, or slipped in his bathroom -- like so many Russians lately, and like any of us potentially.

Oped, Editorial, Published on 14/04/2023

» The "seven dangerous days" campaign to reduce road accidents during the Songkran festival was officially launched on Wednesday, albeit without the usual fanfare and widespread publicity befitting the first fully-fledged Songkran in three years after the pandemic-induced hiatus.

Speed up road safety

Oped, Editorial, Published on 08/10/2022

» A fatal crash involving a 15-year-old boy who jumped a red light while driving a luxury car and rammed into another young man on a motorcycle in Nakhon Ratchasima's Muang district highlights the perils of underage driving as well as flaws in the road safety laws due to widespread reckless behaviour and people's willingness to flout the rules.
