Betting on bugs can be bit of a gamble

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/10/2015

» The most important news last week was undoubtedly a dramatic police swoop on a beetle fight in the northern province of Phrae. The eagle-eyed cops were so pleased with this successful raid they even held a press conference in which they announced to crime reporters that they arrested three men, confiscated two beetles and seized the grand sum of 100 baht, allegedly used for gambling purposes.

Do you know where that diamond's been?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 20/09/2015

» The case of the Chinese lady who swallowed a 10-million baht diamond after stealing it at a Bangkok jewellery fair last week certainly provided an entertaining diversion from some of the guff we have been subjected to of late.

No crookery today, thank you very much

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 06/09/2015

» Today, believe it or not, Thailand celebrates National Anti-Corruption Day. For 24 hours, no one will be on the fiddle, or at least seen to be on the fiddle.

At least we’ll be safe from the Blue Meanies

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/07/2015

» It appears the navy’s plans to purchase three submarines from China have been temporarily put on hold. The proposed deal had not exactly been greeted with people dancing in the streets.

When the price isn’t quite right

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/04/2015

» If anything is going to upset visitors to Thailand, it is the double-standard pricing at tourist spots. It is a system that is not easy to defend and prompts many lively letters to our PostBag section from irate foreigners. However, one suspects things are unlikely to change.

Thoughts on handling gentlemen of the press

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/04/2015

» The first Saturday in April is officially Hug A Newsman Day, well at least in the US where they have a silly theme for just about every day (pet lovers will be pleased to learn that April 2 was National Ferret Day). It is safe to say that journalists do not receive a hug too often and to be honest, most newshounds don’t look particularly huggable. I am an occasional recipient of a hug from the wife, although admittedly that might mean she has spotted something rather expensive at the mall.

A new look, but did anybody tell the cabbies?

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 11/01/2015

» Returning to Suvarnabhumi airport from the Northeast last Sunday, I decided to try out the new-look taxi system with the impressive-sounding “automatic queue-card kiosks”, rather than my normal practice of sneaking up to the fourth floor and grabbing a taxi from outside the departure lounge.

Another year to remember, or maybe forget

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/12/2014

» Well, we've just about scraped through another 12 months, although at times things did look a bit on the shaky side. At least all the whistle-blowing has abated. Here are a few reminders of events and characters that graced the year 2014, although some you may prefer to forget.

OPINION

It's hard to beat a munchy, crunchy Thai bug

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 05/10/2014

» The most important news of the week is that Thailand is now the world's largest producer of edible insects, with 20,000 insect farms operating in the kingdom. On occasions my bedroom feels like one of the farms, with assorted weird UFOs buzzing around.

No sex please, we’re in sin-free Pattaya

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 07/09/2014

» One can only wish the authorities, who last week announced plans to turn Pattaya from “Sin City” into a family-oriented paradise, the best of luck. They are definitely going to need it.
