BTS bid must bring benefit

» Transparency and public interest must be a priority when the government decides whether or not it will extend Bangkok Mass Transit System’s (BTSC) concession for the skytrain’s Green Line. Last week, the cabinet withheld its approval to extend BTSC’s concession for 30 more years, as proposed by Interior Minister, Anupong Paojinda, following strong opposition from the Transport Ministry.

» Last week, a group of residents in Soi Vibhavadi 5 staged a protest against the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration for a land appropriation bid that will swallow their houses and property near the Skytrain depot, formerly the Mor Chit bus terminal, in order to accommodate an elevated road construction project. The residents vowed to take the agency to the Administrative Court.

» In a desperate bid to regulate passenger van operations, the state last year launched a series of measures to make them safer. The goal of getting this extremely popular service in order as part of the regime's "return happiness to the people" policy was laudable. But the implementation, using a centralised, top-down bureaucratic style, has been riddled with errors. Some measures have simply missed the point.
