You can forget HAL 9000

Life, James Hein, Published on 05/12/2018

» It has been over five years and it was time for a new PC. It took a while to pull together, required an eclectic set of carefully chosen components, and I paid someone to put it together for me, having done that myself too many times in the past.

Connected to the grid for life

Life, James Hein, Published on 03/08/2016

» I had an unsettling experience recently where all of my Yahoo emails seemed to vanish and I mean everything. When I logged into my account it was completely bare. While it was all there a couple of hours later it made me realise just how dependent I was on my email account. Thinking a bit more I realised that I also depend on Skype and to a smaller extent Yahoo. Then I thought about the people who have a much larger online presence. For some who are always sending electronic messages it could be a terrifying experience to be suddenly cut off from all regular communication. This kind of effect is a very modern one and I suspect that it has not been investigated very thoroughly in the journals as yet but I suspect it will be a newly defined psychology condition sometime in the near future.

Windows 10 seems a success story

Life, James Hein, Published on 04/11/2015

» It has been a while now and the feedback on Windows 10 has generally been positive. I know a few people that have taken advantage of the free upgrade offer and with few exceptions they have been satisfied with the results, including those that have been critical of versions 8.x. As I have mentioned previously, getting a replacement Start menu is helpful. Another thing to do before upgrading is to check that there are Windows 10 device drivers for all of your hardware. This may require a visit to the websites of the manufacturer of your peripherals especially for printers, scanners and music interface devices. If they don't have them then you may have a problem.

Web standard development in the pipeline

Life, James Hein, Published on 16/07/2014

» Samsung, Dell, Intel, Broadcom and others have started the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) with the aim of uniting on standards for internet development. Or, in their own words, “will seek to define a common communication framework based on industry standard technologies to wirelessly connect and intelligently manage the flow of information among devices, regardless of form factor, operating system or service provider” and “it is our intention to create a specification and an open source project that will allow interoperability for all types of devices and operating systems”. For the moment this announcement is about there is to it, with more information to follow later.
