As a reformist, Prime Minister Pra-yut Chan-o-cha should quickly verify Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Capt Thamanat Prompow's claims that he didn't (a) plead guilty to charges of drug trafficking in Australia and (b) didn't serve a four-year jail sentence for his crime, thus disqualifying him from office.

» Surasak Glahan in his Feb 7 commentary, "Justice system still shackled by politics", hit the nail on the head. Thailand as we all know has a bad human rights record. I can only blame the people who are handling this case, which I am sorry to say will harm Thailand in the long run, with a loss in the number of tourists. I would like to know the number of Bahraini tourists versus Australian tourists coming to Thailand. I would dare say there are more Australians.

A number of weeks ago I made a simple calculation based on the projected cost, the expected number of likely passengers and the proposed fare for a high-speed rail to Chiang Mai. The venerable Japanese International Cooperation Agency undertook a large study of that route and concluded it was not feasible and withdrew its interest in it.
