FFP was singled out

Oped, Postbag, Published on 14/03/2020

» Re: "It's not just about FFP", (PostBag, March 12). Khun Piya Samyan defends the Constitutional Court dissolving the Future Forward Party, because "it did violate the law regarding acquisition of income". This is about the "rule of law that is equally applied to all". I fully agree with Khun Piya that the law must be applied without fear or favour -- for if not, the government would be weaponising the law to slay its enemies, so to speak.

Ruling is inconsistent

News, Postbag, Published on 27/02/2020

» I agree with the spirit of the Constitutional Court's verdict on the FFP's loan saga: loans should be considered as contributions. But have the Thai Election Commission or courts previously ruled that loans are, legally speaking, contributions? The Bangkok Post's Feb 21 editorial said: "The EC never ... informed political parties that there are regulations barring them from taking out loans. That's because there are no such rules." Also, if we had such specific and clear rules and laws, our EC and CC would have explicitly based their decisions on them, quoting the section -- but that's not the case.

'Shakespeare' must live

Oped, Postbag, Published on 15/08/2017

» Re: "Court cites national security to extend 'Shakespeare' ban," (BP, Aug 12). As makers of the films in question, we're writing to thank you for printing the news of our struggle for cinematic freedom. However, there is a small error of fact regarding the documentary we made while fighting the censors to rescind the ban on our Macbeth movie Shakespeare Must Die. Censor Must Die (sic, not 'Censors Must Die') was indeed submitted to the Board of Film Censors, which made the historic ruling citing Article 27(1) of the Royal Edict on Film & Video 2008 that "films made from events that actually happened" do not need to go through the censorship process. Significantly, this set a legal precedent which means that purist documentaries are now exempt from censorship. While we will indeed test this ruling soon with our next documentary film, we have not yet done so.

Perils of police reform

News, Postbag, Published on 08/07/2017

» I'm glad that PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is reforming the police at long last, but he shouldn't reinvent the wheel. In 2006, then-prime minister Gen Surayud Chulanont, former army chief and member of our beloved King Rama IX's Privy Council, appointed retired Pol Gen Vasit Dejkunjorn, former chief of police, to head a distinguished commission for this very purpose.

Silence is not consent

News, Postbag, Published on 03/05/2017

» In his April 28 article, "Are Thais getting the dictators they deserve?" Thitinan Pongsudhirak points out that Thais are docile, tame and cowering to the current military dictatorship. Silence should not be taken as condoning military coups or government. People with clear minds understand the culmination of causes and magnitude of political crises leading up to the recent coup.
