Stirring national pride

Guru, Suthivas Tanphaibul, Published on 09/09/2022

» Although being a world leader is not Thailand's strong suit. We, Thais, do know how to find memorable ways to roar our name proudly and make sure others keep us alive in their thoughts. According to the Guinness World Records, many Thais have beaten world records in presenting Thai culture creatively and unexpectedly, which has made us proud. Guru has a small complication of what we have archived.

Giving us a break?

Oped, Published on 26/06/2021

» There were five PostBag letters on June 24. Not one of them was from Felix Qui, Burin Kantabutra, Kuldeep Nagi or Eric Bahrt. Was it because they didn't write any or because the PostBag Editor finally decided to give readers a break from those guys?

Malls can wait

Oped, Postbag, Published on 24/04/2020

» The mall operators are the same moguls who want to help the government. It is the right time for the government to think and act in new ways as Thai society passes through the turmoil caused by Covid-19. Starting next month, the focus should be on four key issues, not on opening the malls. They are: How to prevent the current stage of the virus from reaching a next-stage outbreak; how to help poor people affected by the Covid crisis; how to reform immigration laws to attract foreign investment and prevent our image from deteriorating; and how to reform education and integrate online learning at all levels. Surprisingly, online businesses are thriving, hence malls can wait. It is high time to bring structural reforms in commerce, immigration and education.

Behind the mask

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/03/2020

» Coronavirus -- you've been hearing about it, reading about it, but knock on wood you haven't been infected by it. The world has been sent reeling these past few months because of the virus. Everyone is in a state of panic. Masks are in short supply, sneezing in public places garners dirty looks and everyone is convinced they're living in Raccoon City and the Umbrella Corporation is behind it all (get the Resident Evil reference?). But let's all chill for a sec, which may be difficult to do given the circumstances, but we need to get our facts straight which, apparently, is hard for the Thai Ministry of Public Health to do. Let's talk about Covid-19 and how it affects us in Thailand.

» The excuse that the "skewed scales must have been due to poor glueing during its making" offered by the director of the Chumpholphonphisai School in explanation for the controversial Wai Kru flower arrangements as reported in the Bangkok Post's June 15 edition, is priceless.

P is for pancake and party

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 16/11/2018

» Pancakes are a breakfast favourite for a lot of people and they're just hands-down pretty dang delicious and awesome (if you're a pancake hater... uh, why?). But aside from that, they've also become a starting point for friendships and bonds to be made thanks to Robin Vogelaar. For the past few years, Vogelaar has travelled around the world and hosted events in different countries with a simple premise: he cooks Dutch pancakes, people meet up and eat, and have a good time. It's a simple thing yet it has gotten the attention of others that Vogelaar was able to take the TEDx stage at Abidjian, Côte d'Ivoire. On November 24, he's bringing the Dutch Pancake Party to the Big Mango. Guru spoke to him on everything pancake party.
