Wealth gap still endangers democracy

News, Wichit Chantanusornsiri, Published on 24/05/2018

» Time flies. This week marks the fourth year of the military regime under Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha taking power after it ousted the civilian government in a coup in 2014. It's hard to imagine the military could ever have made a comeback to politics after the 1992 uprising when the men in green were forced to go back to the barracks, never mind managing to stay this long.

Women in work key to China fertility

News, Adam Minter, Published on 24/05/2018

» China is home currently to 241 million people over the age of 60, approximately 17% of the population. By 2050, the elderly will number around 500 million and account for more than one-third of the population. By early next year, the infamous one-child and -- more recently -- two-child policies should be no more.

News, Larry Jagan, Published on 21/05/2018

» Myanmar's civilian government is coming under increasing fire on all fronts. Or so it would seem. Pressure on Myanmar is mounting, especially from the UN and the US, as the government tries desperately to arrange for the return of nearly a million Muslim refugees -- who fled to Bangladesh to escape the violence in the strife-torn western region of Rakhine.

In times of trouble, Meghan radicalises the royals

News, John Lloyd, Published on 21/05/2018

» In at least one thing, in its present time of troubles, the United Kingdom remains pre-eminent. At 92, Queen Elizabeth II is the longest-serving head in the world, both of a state and a royal family whose magnificence and capacity for display easily tops anything else in the West. Though far outranked in wealth by the Sultan of Brunei, 71, and in both wealth and power by King Salman of Saudi Arabia, 82, she has a firm base of popularity. Good for her; a problem for her successors.
