To selfie or not to selfie?

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 03/07/2015

» The photograph was fuzzy, but ironically, I clearly remember the moment of coming across it, and what was on it, as if it were just yesterday. It was a picture of a pale, blurry blob of a face, framed by jet-black hair tied in a low ponytail. On that face, lay an eager smile and two unfocused specks of flash in what appeared to be beady and squinty eyes. Two pale arms on the sides implied that the camera was already as stretched out as far as it could be. But all this happened a terribly long time ago, circa 1994, way before the ghastly concept of the selfie was born.

I'll never forget what's'isname or thingy

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/09/2017

» The other day a friend and I were trying to remember the name of an obscure British actor from back in the 1960s. His name continued to escape us, although we both knew who we were talking about. So we settled on calling him "what's'isname" or on occasions "what's'isface".

Coming to terms with what's in your head

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 15/07/2019

» After a verse about fresh nuts sold at a floating market in Thailand -- yet sung by the world's darling chipmunk brothers Chip and Dale -- took social media by storm, people started to share comments about how they could not get the music out of their head.

Political Art Toys

» The frustration against the status quo can be expressed in several ways. If you're a hip-hop artist, you can rap and rhyme about it in a viral music video. If you no longer give a damn, you can put a certain uncle on blast in your Facebook post and mention his official page (you know who you are). Even if you're just a bystander, you can't dodge political illustrations and memes on your newsfeed.

Leave race out of it

Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 26/09/2022

» It's easy to get upset when the movie you've paid tickets for turns out to be not as good as you expected. It's also common to see people get mad when a film adaptation of their favourite novel doesn't do it justice, whether due to plot changes or miscast roles. I mean it's OK if you aren't happy and complain about it to your friends and family. However, don't you think it's a little overboard to go online and slam the movie on social media, or even join in with other angry netizens and start mocking and bullying the actor who portrays the role that you don't approve of?
