'Shakespeare' must live
Oped, Postbag, Published on 15/08/2017
» Re: "Court cites national security to extend 'Shakespeare' ban," (BP, Aug 12). As makers of the films in question, we're writing to thank you for printing the news of our struggle for cinematic freedom. However, there is a small error of fact regarding the documentary we made while fighting the censors to rescind the ban on our Macbeth movie Shakespeare Must Die. Censor Must Die (sic, not 'Censors Must Die') was indeed submitted to the Board of Film Censors, which made the historic ruling citing Article 27(1) of the Royal Edict on Film & Video 2008 that "films made from events that actually happened" do not need to go through the censorship process. Significantly, this set a legal precedent which means that purist documentaries are now exempt from censorship. While we will indeed test this ruling soon with our next documentary film, we have not yet done so.

When art gets stifled
Life, Thana Boonlert, Published on 21/11/2022
» 'Art is short, a case is long," read a banner. Students apparently hijacked the well-known motto "art is long, life is short" by Prof Silpa Bhirasri, the father of Thai modern art, in protest of Chiang Mai University's legal action against its own lecturers and a student who "trespassed" on the art centre to exhibit works, some of which might challenge those in power, last year. It is a case in point for stifling democracy in Thai art.

Theft out of need may not be crime
News, Published on 05/05/2016
» Stealing food from a supermarket may not be a crime in Italy if you are homeless and hungry, the nation's highest appeals court has ruled. In a case that has drawn comparisons to Les Miserables, the Supreme Court of Cassation threw out the conviction of a homeless man from Ukraine, Roman Ostriakov, who was caught trying to take €4.07 (about 164 baht) worth of cheese and sausage from a store in Genoa without paying for it. A trial court sentenced him in February 2015 to six months in jail and a fine of €100.
