Thai army needs to march to a new tune

Oped, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 13/05/2023

» I always get feelings of fear when I hear the army's famous propaganda song, Nak Paendin, which in Thai means "burden of the country". As a child born during the 1970s, this song reminds me of military putsches.

Brits can still put on a good show

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 14/05/2023

» Considering how depressing the world news has been lately, the coronation of King Charles III last weekend provided a brief diversion. It might not be everybody's cup of tea but the Brits certainly know how to put on a show if a bit of history is involved. They're good at pomp and pageantry and most importantly love a parade with plenty of horses.

    Stolen moments

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 01/01/2016

» In Kongdej Jaturanrasmee's new film Snap, a wedding photographer returns to his hometown in Chantaburi with a group of high school friends. In that picturesque small town, Boy (Tony Rakkaen) takes happy prenuptial pictures of his old flame Phueng (Waruntorn Paonil), who's marrying a high-ranking soldier. That word, "soldier", carries a weight so leaden here: Snap is a soulful romance about a man searching for lost time, but the film is contextualised as a personal aftermath of the larger social tremors, namely the military coups d'etat of 2006 and 2014.

    The trap of trust

Life, Amitha Amranand, Published on 27/07/2017

» We often get to see the intersection of the spiritual and the worldly realms in Nikorn Saetang's plays. Buddhist and animist beliefs also play a major role in his work. The spirits of a Japanese soldier and a pining woman walk among the living in search of their loved ones in Rai Pamnak (Where Should I Lay My Soul?). An adult-size baby forces himself into a family whose daughter is hiding her abortion from everyone in Tarok Jokapred (Perverted Baby). A man reincarnates over and over again and refuses to forget his past lives and his family in Kerd-Dub (Reincarnate).
