Indeed, they are all that we say they are but we simply can't do anthing about it. Over officious, meglamaniacal beaurocrats who relish their little bit of power. For me? I've been waiting over a year now for my appeal to come up. I am considerably older than my Thai wife, by some 20 yeras and do you think she's after me for my money or a better quality of life in the U.K.? What do you think about the U.K? Who in their right mind would want to come and reside in this crap hole of a country? As for my wife, she has considerable wealth and comes from elite Thai stock. She is lowering herself to come and live in this country as I cannot leave here myself due to court orders, etc. etc. Even her position did not excuse us from the ECO infering that she was a prostitute and that the marriage was not subsisting. So, I ask you all, now doesn't that just blow your prejudices straight out of the window? Listen, each case if different and who says you cannot fall for a bar girl and get ripped off if you want? We're all adults and if that's what floats your boat then who are we to judge and take the moral high ground. It matters not, you will all be dealt the same blow when you sit before the ECO. Its a big game really, more of luck and cunning than sincerity and justice. Why not all get together, outside the Tribunal (88 Rosebery Ave., London. EC1) and hold against your chests a picture of your spouse/partner. A bit of news coverage goes a long way to highlight this sort of injustice. As a 'founding' member of Fathers 4 Justice, I know this sort of campaign works - it just depends how eager you all are to make it work. Maybe apathy will rule as usual! I'll be there on the 16th January 2006 at 10am. Maybe see some of you there...? Good Luck

First, learn from others mistakes rather than making them yourself. Do your homework on this lady. Where did you meet her? Did you have sex the first night? Are you "helping the family out?" Is money going to the lady? What is her job? Do you accept her word on her past experiences without checking things out? Has there been a request for Sin Sot (dowry money) and how much? Don't answer these questions on this forum, answer them to yourself. Remember also, that there is another foreigner just like you who fell in love with her . He planned to take care of her and love her just like you. Why did they get divorced? Did he pay Sin sot? I have been married for 4 years and I still feel uneasy about alot of things ...particularly the things deliniated in Ianbeale's post. Don't automatically assume that you are going to bring this lady to the US and she is going to be forever grateful and will take care of you the rest of your life. There is not enough space to write of my experiences, the experiences of my friends, and the books that I have read on Thailand. My recommendation is to go very very slow... and than slow down a bit more. Check things out.. If she has a job, call her LAND line, not her mobile phone. If you are coming to Thailand, come unannounced a few days early.... When you are buying a home, investing in stocks, wouldn't you do an in-depth analysis? After spending time working and living in Thailand I have grown weary. I have seen and experienced too much. I have since returned to the US. I was so happy to return. While on my way back in the Narita airport I found a writing on the wall of the toilet that I would like to share. It was so profound that I wrote it down. It said, "This is my last flight home after living in Thailand for 5 years. I was the GM of a medium sized company. I leave with this life lesson to share with you. Don't trust anything anyone of them says. You may think they are stupid and you are probably right. but they excell at deception. It is all they know. They will exceed your wildest imagination to cheat, lie, and steal." This comes from a man who has spent 5 years in Thailand. Learn from him. Good Luck to you. I truly wish you well.

The damaged countries will show up with retaliatory measure, like raising this "Thai agenda' to international institute such as WTO and the damaged foreign firm wil sue to own court or international court. All property acquired and kept in, say in London before this thai marriage, is of course excluded to divide when thai divorce. However wise thai wife tracks them down on pillow and half drunken farang gave all past information to her. Then she will chase you to sell them and buy new condo nearby London, or if they are stock, let you switch from BP to Shell stock. If you do this, all your money is subject to share her. Even if you dont confess, Thai resident lawyors or 'True' detective service in London track down your personal information about double marriage, hidden property and hidden children. My best advice to all of you are Dont register marriage, but support thai wife and if you really love her, buy a house to her, and say clearly "This is all what I can do for you because I love you". That is it, then your life will be safer. If you have new child from thai wife, you can concede title to child with its fater - your name, then your wife and her sibling can not sell it without your attention to the registration office (in Thailand, regional land department, Do not put thai wife name as the inheritant, or her brothers will do harm to you children). Once again, the best advice to all of you farang men is, do not register marriage.

    • Anonymous commented : David, i am not so sure about your remarks. Yes , most of the bar girls of Pat Pong ,Pattaya etc are from the poorer , darker skinned families of farming stock. But there really are other places to meet Thai girls than those already mentioned. On several occaisions i have been able to strike up conversations with ladies with lighter skin and even had casual dates with them, always treating them with respect, in fact i am still in contact with some after several years. It really depends on yourself, maybe that they are more shy and cautious than the average bar girl who needs the money and has to strike asap. Look again David and don't be too hasty. Anyhow, whats wrong with the darker skinned ladies, i just love them.

[/quote:2pmhtrun] The price quoted for 2-3 pieces or more are called "raka soong" meaning wholesale price. It's normal for many clothes shop to sell this way. This is to quickly reduce one's stock and overhead costs. A single piece of clothing or jewellery will be quoted the retail price. this is applicable to both Thai and non Thais. Not just farang. Many Thais or non Thais (mainly Asian shoppers) tend to overcome this by asking other customers to join forces to make up the requisite minimum number to get the cheaper price. For example if you only need 1 item and the next customer needs 2, so in total, 3 items and you may qualify for raka soong. Many times, my Thai wife has in the past been approached by Singaporeans/Malaysian/Chinese/etc customers whilst shopping to join forces in order to get wholesale prices. Japanese or Koreans are rich enough not to bargain whilst Westerners are more uptight or maybe too confused with the system to get their head around.
