    'Happiness' is here to stay

Life, Kanokporn Chanasongkram, Published on 31/07/2015

» Earlier this week, I watched a morning TV news programme showing a video clip of Thai soldiers effortlessly dancing to a catchy luk thung number, after performing slower and more precise movements to Khuen Kwam Suk Hai Prathet Thai (Return Happiness To Thailand) — the theme song of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO).

    Taking Off

Life, Amitha Amranand, Published on 01/10/2015

» A modern classic play, a Greek film, The Beatles and Italian operas were sources of inspiration for the young artists at the second Take Off Festival, which took place at the Thong Lor Art Space last weekend and showcased works by recent drama graduates. The great gig in the sky

Life, John Clewley, Published on 09/02/2016

» Musician David Bowie was the biggest name in the music business to pass away recently. His death at 69 prompted extraordinary media coverage across the world. Bowie was more than just a rock musician, he was also a pop culture icon. Like many people, Bowie was part of the musical landscape I grew up in, from his art/glam rock early days when I was at school to his Thin White Duke days when I was at university, Bowie was always there as part of the sonic furniture.

    Hail, Hollywood!

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 04/03/2016

» Funny but not that funny, smart and striving to be awfully smart, Hail, Caesar! belongs to the middleweight rank of the Coen brothers' catalogue. It's a movie about movie love, and about the woes of making movies, or at least studio movies, the constant pain of working in that carnivorous system in which its members nibble on one another, and in which the faceless bosses are taking the biggest bite. You can tell from the poster that this is a tribute to the old Hollywood of 1950s, but since this is a Coens' movie, it sprawls into satire, slapstick, musical numbers, and religious mockery, with a darker undercurrent of the post-war ideological theatre played out in the Californian backlot.
