Master of puppets
Life, Pichaya Svasti, Published on 16/08/2019
» His heart and mind remain true to aesthetics. His eagle eyes are still sharp, focusing on every detail. National Artist Chakrabhand Posayakrit is 76 years old today. To celebrate, a new exhibition is showcasing the hun krabok (traditional Thai rod puppets), paintings and drawings from his 1989 production of Sam Kok (Romance Of The Three Kingdoms).

Following in Sunthon Phu's footsteps
Life, Karnjana Karnjanatawe, Published on 25/07/2019
» All along the Chao Phraya, from Bangkok Noi in the capital to Bang Kruai in Nonthaburi, are several old temples and communities that have stood for more than two centuries. These sites are mentioned in the works of Sunthon Phu, the great poet who lived during the reigns of King Rama I through to King Rama IV (1786-1855).

What if?
Life, Bernard Trink, Published on 25/07/2019
» A cine buff -- contemporary, silent, foreign -- since my childhood in the Big Apple, still with a good but not photographic memory, I recall a French movie about a wealthy widow who decided to satisfy her curiosity by looking up her old boyfriends. She wondered what would her life have been like had she married one of them.

Nang Nak at 20
Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 26/07/2019
» Thai cinema saw a new horizon open 20 years ago up this month. On July 23, 1999, a little film called Nang Nak opened in cinemas. An adaptation of the country's most popular ghost tale about a wife who died in childbirth but stuck around as a spirit waiting for her husband to return from war, the film arrived carrying high hopes -- and exceeded all of them. Nang Nak, directed by Nonzee Nimibutr and written by Wisit Sasanatieng, unleashed an unprecedented momentum of enthusiasm and became the first Thai movie to blaze past the 100-million-baht mark at the box office.

» Last month, a new cartoon drawing bestowed by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua featuring people enjoying volunteer services was launched. The drawing was accompanied by Thai text which sends a message across that helping one another is like planting the seed of virtue and that we are doing good from the heart. The drawing aims at encouraging all Thai people to have the mind of a volunteer so that they can do good for the society and for the country they live in.

The boys are back in town
Life, Melalin Mahavongtrakul, Published on 29/07/2019
» After listening to their music for more than half my life, Westlife became one of those bands on my bucket list that I wanted to see live. And so, when word came that they would be performing in Thailand following their reunion last year, there was no hesitation -- I just had to be at their concert.

Food for thought
Life, Kanokporn Chanasongkram, Published on 29/07/2019
» Som tam is a staple that I eat almost every day, but always skipping the tomato and long bean that end up in the restaurant's bin. The other day, I started drinking soya milk -- it was too sweet. The remaining amount was discarded in the kitchen sink. I often have to throw away rotten carrots and other vegetables as well as unconsumed kub khao in plastic bags. Those ready-to-eat foods became expired items in the fridge.
