A summit to prevent war
News, Editorial, Published on 31/05/2018
» It is taking feverish preparations to bring about the June 12 Singapore summit between the two most extroverted world political leaders. Presumably, US President Donald Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un are back on schedule for their meeting. It is necessary to say "presumably" because this summit has gone from impossibility to certainty, then from unlikely to cancelled, and now "back on schedule". Two weeks out, the summit offers some promise of being the most important such meeting of our age.

Charter talk spooks NCPO
News, Editorial, Published on 01/06/2018
» The top two leaders of the military regime this week seemed unwilling to let go of their desire to control Thailand's future after the general election, tentatively planned for next year. A dodgy 'fake news' hunt
News, Editorial, Published on 04/06/2018
» Last week's fast junta action over an item posted on a website showed questionable judgement by the officers involved from the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO). A 21-year-old Cambodian and six Thais were arrested and charged with serious offences concerning national security and public order. Authorities called the article "fake news" but that description itself is highly contentious. The main problem is that the case proceeded merely because Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was offended.

Preventable marine deaths
News, Editorial, Published on 05/06/2018
» At the very moment Thailand has begun to worry about massive imports of mostly dangerous foreign waste, the most dramatic proof possible exposes one of the country's most dangerous exports. Marine biologists on the weekend released details and highly disturbing photographs of the death last week of a pilot whale in the Gulf off Songkhla province. An autopsy by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) after the animal drifted ashore and died on the beach showed the cause of death. It either starved or strangled on more than 80 large plastic bags.

EC puts Don in a dilemma
News, Editorial, Published on 06/06/2018
» A controversial decision by the Election Commission (EC) has put the prime minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai in an uncomfortable place. On one hand, being in evident violation of an anti-corruption clause in the 2017 constitution, he should resign. But the devil of this case is in the details, because in technical terms the minister has not breached that new law at all. The EC wants the Constitutional Court to decide, but in this case, no court decision will satisfy everyone.
