    Stunning chorus of molam sounds

Life, John Clewley, Published on 31/03/2015

» One of the delights of hearing the morning dawn chorus of birds here in Bangkok and indeed many Asian cities is the sound of the Asian or common koel (Eudynamys scolopacea), which in Thai is called nok ka-wow. I can mimic the sound of the koel roughly with a whistle, but khaen player Sombat Simla echoes the bird's sound exactly in the middle of a molam tune, with effortless ease. He can also mimic horns, ambulances and police cars, disco beats and synth drums, and the sound of heavy traffic. But his tour de force, which I've written about before, is the sound of a train journey, complete with traffic crossings and the calls of barbecue chicken vendors.

    Riding while hydrating

    Life, Published on 31/03/2015

» One of my coaching clients, Meaw, went for a relaxing, long Sunday bike ride outside after a hard stressful week at work. She headed out to Ayutthaya for a 70km ride with her one bottle of water, but at about 40km she suddenly felt as if she had no energy, was dizzy, couldn't focus, wanted to vomit and started to cramp. She messaged me and asked what was wrong with her, I told her she most likely had heat exhaustion or heat stroke and should go to a shop with some air-con, sit down, drink some water, eat a banana then message me again for a second consultation.

    The good child

Life, Pattramon Sukprasert, Published on 31/03/2015

» Be a good kid — from generation to generation, this warning stays unchanged as it sums up the expectation that adults have towards children. Many explanations on the meaning of "good kids" have been made as a way to shape a child's path in life, and it seems that society has formed some kind of consensus on this definition.

    Pink-petalled pampering

Life, Napamon Roongwitoo, Published on 31/03/2015

» The sakura season is in full bloom in Japan, but just because Thailand doesn't have sakura trees doesn't mean we can't enjoy the pulchritude of the pretty pink petals here. After all, Bangkok is a city where there are perhaps more Japanese restaurants than Thai restaurants. Bringing the Japanese tradition of celebrating the Cherry Blossom festival to town is a logical choice.
