Vote to make a difference

» When a reporter approached a vendor this week and asked for her views on the Bangkok governor election, she responded by saying she wasn't expecting anything to change and was fed up with the topic. While such feelings are understandable given the lack of charisma and exaggerated policy platforms of most of the candidates, eligible voters must turn out in force at the polls tomorrow if there is to be a meaningful result. Yes, it can be a tough choice for those not voting along party lines but democracy has always been about challenge and the issues in municipal elections rarely change.

Malaysia can help to secure peace

» The news that Thailand has agreed to formal Malaysian facilitation of a dialogue process to end the long conflict in southern Thailand is surely welcome. Most immediately it reflects that both the Thai government and all its parts, as well as the shadowy insurgent movement and all its parts agree that Malaysia needs to be part of the solution to the conflict that has raged for nine long years and cost more than 5,000 lives.

» I thought I would go to hell, I mean to the poll, quietly come tomorrow. I thought I wouldn't have to be a cantankerous, sardonic, petulant voter and simply close one eye and ear and accept my fate as a democratic Bangkokian who fantasises about living in SimCity. Born and raised and lost and having no wish to leave here, I wonder if the angels have fled Krungthep, or if they're still watching us metastasise - restless, stupefied, drunk by the sunlight-ricocheted concrete daze - and yet keeping on sprouting, blooming, like a tree, or like cancer.
