» Hong Kong covers an area of 2,800 square kilometres with a population of 7.3 million. It has one of the highest population densities in the world at about 6,400 people per square kilometre and rents are the highest in Asia. Tech at its worst

Life, Arusa Pisuthipan, Published on 08/01/2018

» Create a tool, and someone will weaponise it. This is the core message of British producer Charlie Brooker's current Netflix hit Black Mirror. Basically, the speculative anthology series exposes the dark side of technology and how it can bring out the worst in humans.

India's economy faces ominous 2018

News, Mihir Sharma, Published on 09/01/2018

» You'd think the Indian economy had returned to rosy health. It seems to have recovered from two enormous disruptions -- Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision just over a year ago to withdraw 86% of the currency in circulation, and the poorly-planned rollout in the middle of 2017 of a new goods-and-services tax. Exports are no longer declining, as they had for several quarters; indeed, for the last month that data is available, they rose 30%. The Purchasing Managers' Index expanded the fastest it has in five years. At least one international ratings agency has upgraded India's credit rating.

There may be ominous signs during the Second Summit of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) on Jan 10-11 in Phnom Penh.

PM must step in to crisis

News, Editorial, Published on 09/01/2018

» Just days after he claimed he had become a politician, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is letting down the country. He's not alone in refusing to approach the important scandal involving the watches and jewellery of Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon. Others also are battling to avoid any accountability. Most notably, the junta-appointed National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has acted so poorly, it should stand aside and turn the issue over to a trustworthy person or group.
