Don't carry the donkey

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 17/01/2014

» Vexatiously, the political tension that has been going on for the past couple of months has brought a new lifestyle hype to Thais. I'm not talking about people joining the rallies, blocking intersections, expressing political opinions on Facebook or dressing up to present their standpoint. I'm simply talking about a new sense of political awareness, especially among those in Bangkok.

OPINION

Getting our ethics straightened out

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 27/11/2013

» Can we stop talking about democracy for a moment? It's not just since the unrolling of the Thaksin regime that I've been getting so fed up with the rampant misuse of "democracy" _ often by people who have no clue what this noble term really means _ that I've almost puked on occasion. But it's also because what I'm going to say right now has very little to do with political values, just plain morality.

Don't be too quick to turn the page

» This year Bangkok sees itself the World Book Capital _ a title Unesco bestows annually to a city with admirable programmes to promote books and reading. Of course, it doesn't matter if Bangkok is really worthy of such an honour, over the past several years we've been yearning to achieve many... umm... impossibilities, whether it's to be the fashion city of the world, the best tourist destination or even Asia's medical hub.

OPINION

Stop turning the extraordinary into the ordinary

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 15/08/2013

» A kindergarten student brutally tormented by a third-grader. Fathers raping daughters. Teenagers enjoying a drug party. Monks possessing supercars, riding private jets, having sexual intercourse and carrying firearms. That's not counting the non-stop lustful scandals in local showbiz and numerous corruption schemes by relentless politicians.

OPINION

Platitudes with attitudes

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 11/06/2013

» Best-selling books dispensing spiritual advice from emerging writers, television programmes on the young and successful, and entrepreneurs who encourage others to think outside the box and thrive _ these may seem like great life inspirations offered at almost no cost. But for me, they are more a cause of concern rather than something to admire, especially when these subjects are what the younger generation of Thais value at the moment.

Inside the five-star environment

» When travelling, for business or pleasure, nothing beats the comfort of five-star accommodation.

Mass shootings kill all of us

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 13/02/2013

» We were living only 60km away when the Columbine High School massacre took place in Colorado, USA, 14 years ago. It was one of the world's most shocking school shooting sprees. Since then, more than a dozen shooting massacres have horrified the world, including those at Virginia Tech in 2007, Northern Illinois University in 2008, Albertville Secondary School in Winnenden, Germany, in 2009 and Utoya Island youth camp in Buskerud, Norway, in 2011.

Reflection on perfection

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 04/01/2013

» A few months ago my son eagerly asked if life could ever be perfect. It was a surprising question from an eight-year-old and led to a pleasant discussion about the chances people have to seek a perfect life. We came to the conclusion that, in reality, it's impossible for anyone to have all the advantages: in this case wealth, health, talent, physical beauty and happiness.

OPINION

Invest in the rest

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 09/10/2012

» Over the past few years I've been very happy to know I have made one of the best financial decisions ever.

OPINION

Parenting is not a popularity contest

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 04/07/2012

» Some blame it on the media. Many have thrown the guilt completely at the failure of our educational system. But the recent controversy over schoolchildren in Ratchaburi and Phetchaburi indulging in sexual activities in public, which very much contradicts Thailand's long-perceived image as a country where children obey their parents and abstinence is held in high esteem, boils down to the parents.
