Censorship can be a total bore

» At last, I watched a movie in China.

Sewage and the city

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 02/08/2012

» It takes artists to give beautiful meanings to unpleasant objects like toilets or gutters. One example is French writer Victor Hugo's description of flood drainage system: "The sewer is the conscience of the city."

A tale of two Ferraris

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 14/09/2012

» It purrs and it roars and it sounds like a jet engine to me. Despite abhorring its petrol-guzzling appetite, the sound of this pricey sports car often turns my head. It is not just a car. It is a Ferrari. And it is a dream.

Sushi and the city

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 21/09/2012

» Everyone has his or her own survival menu _ a kind of affordable and easy food that we can comfortably eat when we do not know what to eat or have to save money. It could be instant noodles, sticky rice with spicy dip, bread or even snacks like Lays crisps.

The baton passes on to the disabled

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 16/08/2012

» I owe a big apology for my previous column. It was ignorant of me to write that all eyes would shift to Rio de Janeiro once the London Games ended. A reader by the name of Bern1005 wrote a comment on this newspaper's website, and it made so much sense. "Indeed, a few eyes will shift to the Paralympics in London which will take place in the same location as the London Olympic Games between Aug 29 and Sept 6 and this will include Thai athletes," he wrote to remind me.

When all is run and won

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 09/08/2012

» Every party comes to an end. So too does the 2012 London Olympic Games, which arrives at its curtain call on Sunday. At the closing ceremony, all eyes will shift to Rio de Janeiro, the city that will take over the torch. Brazil is another BRIC countries _ a new emerging economy beside China, India and Russia _ that plays host to the Games. (Please stand up India, as I am totally convinced that a New Delhi or Mumbai Summer Olympics will shame London and Beijing.)

OPINION

Something fishy is going on

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 05/06/2012

» I'm an incorrigible fish fanatic. I simply cannot imagine myself never eating pla thu (mackerel) with nam prik (chilli dip) _ a traditional Thai dish _ ever again.

Out of the blue, into the dark

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 26/07/2012

» The nonsensical killings at a movie theatre in Aurora, Colorado, last Friday sent a chill down my spine. The feeling reminds me of a line from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: "If you stare into the abyss long enough, the abyss stares back at you."

OPINION

No shark fins please!

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 19/07/2012

» Once in a blue moon, the Chinese government gets it right when it chooses to ban something.

U-tapao!Wehave a problem

Life, Anchalee Kongrut, Published on 05/07/2012

» Suddenly we're talking about clouds and weather. Our society, politicians mostly, have become curious and highly concerned about the issue of climate change, and the complex data that is part and parcel of atmospheric study. Such attention is a big departure from the lukewarm interest Thailand and our policy makers have shown in the past.
