Vintage Ads that Won't Run Today

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 23/04/2021

» I love browsing through Thai old-timey print ads from the yesteryears for the nostalgia and quirks from the past they bring. Mirinda was B1 per bottle and Ovaltine was purported as a drink of choice for ladies who wanted to have glowing skin.

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 02/04/2021

» Sometimes I feel like every other day is April's Fool Day in Thailand given the sheer number of unbelievable news stories, for good or bad reasons, that happen. To belatedly celebrate April's Fool Day in a way that the authorities won't have any problems with, I present you with 10 news stories -- your job will be to discern which ones are genuine. Put T in front of the story you think is true and put F if you think it's an April's Fool Day prank, you know the drill. The answers are provided at the end so no cheating!

Flippant Promotions

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/03/2021

» Businesses can cash in on the talk of the online town by incorporating it into their online promotion in order to grab people's attention amid a barrage of items that flood Facebook newsfeed. A few of them, however, made people stop and stare for the wrong reasons. I noticed two recent incidents where brands cashed in on the political climate in order to promote themselves. And received a tonne of online backlash for it.

Emojis for 2021

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/03/2021

» If Clubhouse isn't enough to make Samsung fanboys considering abandoning Android for iOS, a new set of emojis may. It has been recently reported that iPhone users can look forwards to 217 new emojis that they can use to expand their emojinication (emoji + communication) with. These new ideogrammatic icons include a revamped version of the syringe icon to be bloodless to go with 2021 as the year of Covid-19 vaccination, obvi. The normal black headphone icon will turn white and look like Apple AirPods Max. Three new smileys. Two new hearts. A bunch of bearded men/women in different skin tones (Because why not?). And multiple pairs of couples with a mix of skin tones for interracial lovebirds.

When ___ Creates A Clubhouse Room

Afterlife wish list

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 05/02/2021

» Chinese New Year next Friday is a special one since it'll be the first time it's approved as a public holiday in Thailand by the Cabinet. We may as well make it a tradition, given the huge population of overseas Chinese here. As a third-generation Thai with complete Chinese ethnicity, I grew up with a lot of quirky traditions that my Thai Thai friends may not be aware of. Burning paper offerings on important occasions like Qingming Festival or CNY is at the top as it's a gesture of taking care of departed loved ones in the afterlife with creature comforts. Over the years, I've seen the evolution (and irony) of paper offerings from banknotes with 12 digits (hyperinflation much?) to treadmills so ama and agong can stay in shape. Here are a few of the most creatives offerings for your entertainment:

» Love is in the air (or at least your newsfeed is bombarded with St Valentine's Day promos) as the day of love -- which isn't exclusively romantic in some countries -- is just around the corner. If you haven't found a Valentine as yet, I, as your virtual wingman, have gathered a few of the most amusing/cheesy Thai pick-up lines that have been floating around on the internet to hopefully speed things up for you. If you're already taken or happily single (and there's nothing wrong about choosing to stay single), here's entertainment!

How to Name Your Car Like You're One of the 0.1%

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/02/2021

» The 0.1% of Thais (not 1% 'cause Thailand has the highest wealth inequality in the world, you see) may rejoice at the recent news that soon you can pay an extra fee to give your vehicle a real name on a licence plate instead of the two-alphabets-and-numerals combo the 99.9% are familiar with. The new rules will allow a combination of more than two alphabets, vowels, tone marks and numbers in a vehicle registration plate for a personal car with no more than seven seats. In short, you can name your car after you or give it a person's name. For example, PM Prayut Chan-o-cha can name his "ประยุทธ์ 2 กรุงเทพมหานคร (Prayut 2 Bangkok)" to commemorate his second term. The plan is expected to be implemented around the middle of this year and you can bid for such a plate with starting price of B1 million. Money raised this way will be spent to improve road safety.
