Business fights and disabled rights

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 29/01/2016

» A labour report last week stating that more than 40 local firms were being taken to task by the law for declining to assist the disabled got me concerned over the lack of empathy some entrepreneurs have towards one of the most marginalised groups in society. The report went on to say assets of 44 companies could be foreclosed and sold to raise money, which would go into the Disabled Works Fund because the businesses in question refused to contribute to the fund, set up to raise the quality of life of the disabled in Thailand. The firms were warned to pay up but refused.

New year, new you

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 07/01/2016

» Keeping New Year's resolutions has always been a struggle for me. Hardly a week into 2016, history seems to have repeated itself. Bad habits of bingeing on chocolates and sleeping late resurfaced as quickly as I had made my promise to turn over a new leaf.

Police need image makeover

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 23/10/2015

» The utter mayhem that unfolded a few weeks ago in the vicinity of Phuket's Thalang police station between officers and disgruntled residents who accused them of causing the death of two young drug suspects saw the type of carnage we have not seen in a while.

Tackling child pornography on all fronts

» To stem the proliferation of child pornography in Thailand I believe it will take more than just a stringent set of penalties for offenders.

Stronger together

» Nepal, one of the world's poorest countries, was hit by two massive earthquakes that left a trail of destruction in April. Instead of opting to become despondent over the incident, the Nepali people seem to have banded together to survive the ordeal in a rather gallant manner. The disaster maimed, killed and left thousands homeless. Through the misfortune, however, locals have united, putting their neighbours' needs before their own. This is what I experienced during a recent trip to Nepal, home to Mount Everest.

The ongoing fight for children's rights

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 17/06/2015

» One need not look too far to realise that a Thai child's basic right to life and development is violated daily. Physical and emotional abuse aside, vulnerable children are also easy prey to unscrupulous sex offenders and traffickers.

Give para-athletes a sporting chance

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 15/05/2015

» The year 2015 boasts two important sporting events. The 28th SEA Games in Singapore early next month is followed by the Asean Para Games in December, a biannual multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities.

Stay calm and don't let the bigots win

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 08/04/2015

» Dealing with racism takes a fair amount of patience and emotional maturity. In fact, if done in a calm, cool and collected manner, it can reap long-lasting benefits. An example of this is a story I saw in the news recently of a migrant Indian taxi driver who turned a racist encounter in Darwin, Australia into an opportunity to feed the needy.

The silent shame of a society

Life, Yvonne Bohwongprasert, Published on 29/01/2015

» The manhunt for a serial rapist made front page news this week. Police on Monday arrested a suspect they believe has attacked 12 mainly elderly victims, two of whom were murdered. The ordeal has raised questions as to why a young man would rape elderly women and what, if anything, is being done to address the plight of his victims.
