» Last week, Apple released figures for its most recent quarter, which includes the run up to the new year. There was revenue of US$78.4 billion, beating Wall Street experts again. We must wait for the often-predicted doom a little while longer. Apple thinks revenue for the next quarter should be between $51.5-53.5 billion.

» One of the side-notes from Apple's recent quarterly report was Tim Cook's comments about his automated home. While some likened this to the 1960s Jetsons, my attempts to reach home-automation nirvana more resemble the dystopian world of Sam Lowry in Terry Gilliam's Brazil.

» When writing a summary of 2016 on my own site recently, I made a prediction: Apple's Q1 2017 financial results would be announced on Jan 24. I was wrong, it will be on the 31st, and as always will feature live audio transmission, although it will be at about 5am here.

» My intention had been to run the 2016 MacBook Pro I have as a test machine, with the main work continuing on my 2013 Mac until its replacement arrives in a couple of weeks' time. By the time I wrote last week's eXtensions article, I was enjoying the new Mac so much that Plan B was hatched and I moved everything to the 2016 MacBook Pro.

» During the week I went into the offices of my TV provider and cancelled my subscription. I was politely asked why. Choice. The next morning I was not surprised when the company phoned and a polite young man asked me the same question. He made an offer for a better package at a greatly reduced price. Expanding on my previous comment, I explained why it was more convenient and far more economical to use internet delivery systems for content on demand.

» Apple announced its US$159 (5,700 baht) AirPods at the same time as the iPhone 7, but the Bluetooth-connected device was not made available to customers until last week. There was much online speculation that a problem was found in the production models, so the release was put back. It would have been wrong to release a device with a known problem for a number of obvious reasons.

» The 13-inch MacBook Pro I ordered online arrived last week and I switched to that as soon as I could. The transition was relatively smooth, but there were a couple of adjustments. A problem with these new Macs is not the few adapters available, but the lack of suitable cables.

» The disturbing lack of suitable accessories in Thailand has marred an otherwise great start to my experience with the MacBook Pro. Apart from Apple's own adaptors, there is almost nothing here for users who need USB-C connectivity.

» I am rather keen on photography but I only consider myself an enthusiast. Output quality is important for me: whether for social networking, my own website, or images I send to the Bangkok Post. I sometimes try to steer users away from Adobe Photoshop, not because there is anything wrong with it (apart from pricing), but that the power of that application is totally wasted for most users, especially if their pictures are just being uploaded to Facebook.

» Every time Apple releases a new product there is a rush to print. There have been thousands of comments about the new MacBook Pro and what is wrong with it (and Apple), but much of that wasted effort is by those who haven't even seen the device, let alone touched it.
