A bright spot in global landscape

Oped, John J. Metzler, Published on 02/01/2026

» It's time to consult the crystal snow globe and try to peer ahead to what may be on the horizon for the new year. Without question 2025 has been tumultuous but the year ahead holds cautious promise to finally solve some political crises mixed with some epic events on tap.

Narrative challenged

Oped, Postbag, Published on 11/12/2025

» Re: "Thailand's delicate stance with Israel", (Opinion, Dec 9). As a Jew living in Thailand for over 20 years, I must admit I was not happy with what I read. Indeed, found a number of statements to be offensive: The second paragraph implies that Israel's response to the terrorist attack on Oct 7, 2023, was "genocide" -- a term coined in 1944 to describe Hitler's campaign to exterminate all European Jews, and defined as "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group".

Gaza is being offered a big historic chance

Oped, John J. Metzler, Published on 27/11/2025

» The UN Security Council has approved a landmark American-sponsored resolution which just may give long suffering Gaza its final chance for peace and reconstruction. The US resolution enshrines Washington's 20-point plan for Gaza; the current ceasefire, the establishment of a Board of Peace and backs the creation and deployment of an international stabilisation force for the war-ravished territory. There were 13 votes for, none against, and two abstentions, Russia and China.

Here's a taste of things to come in the US

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 02/10/2025

» 'Predictions are hard, especially about the future' (Danish proverb), but still we make them, especially when we care about the future. Here are some about the future of the United States in the next three and a bit years, expressed as probabilities, although you should not trust the numbers.

UN debate swerves, slides, but scores

Oped, John J Metzler, Published on 01/10/2025

» US President Donald Trump lambasted the United Nations on opening day for its failure to stop global crises in the midst of major regional wars, humanitarian disasters, looming security threats, never mind costly bureaucratic waste. But as the leader of the most prominent and founding UN member state, he then added that the world organisation isn't living up to its potential, and scathingly challenged, "What's the purpose of the United Nations?" The old rebuke, "You can do better!" Sometimes it works.

OPINION

Wrong target

Oped, Postbag, Published on 19/09/2025

» Activist Veera Somkwamkid's relentless pursuit against former deputy prime minister and ex-defence minister Prawit Wongsuwon in the luxury watch saga has been out of the media's attention for some time. The case seems to have been left in a drawer, gathering dust for years.

OPINION

Hamas exploits humanitarian aid

Oped, Orna Sagiv, Published on 01/08/2025

» Across Gaza, humanitarian aid is urgently needed. Yet much of it fails to reach the people for whom it is intended. Instead, international assistance is routinely hijacked by Hamas -- a reality enabled by the troubling complicity of the United Nations.

India and Pakistan edge closer to war

Oped, John J Metzler, Published on 08/05/2025

» Yesterday, India launched strikes on Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, two weeks after a terrorist attack. The situation follows a long-smouldering fuse which has reignited in the wake of the terrible terrorist attack killing 27 tourists in a region of disputed Kashmir, part of India's territory. Some 25 Indian civilians were apparently targeted because of their Hindu religion.
