Ukraine War: South Korea to the rescue?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 20/11/2024

» The consensus assumption is still that Donald Trump will force Ukraine to yield to Russia as soon as he takes office on Jan 20. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky himself said on Friday that once Mr Trump becomes president the war with Russia will "end sooner" than it would otherwise have done.

Cues from Iran on who to vote for

News, Marc Champion, Published on 03/07/2024

» The opposition just won a first round of elections, forcing a runoff in which everything depends on where third-party votes go. No, not in France -- in Iran. You could be forgiven for missing it amid all the excitement over the advance of the French hard right, President Joe Biden's car crash debate in the US and the coming immolation of the UK's Conservative Party. Yet Iran's experience is worth attention, not least as a reminder of what to vote for and why. Iran, to recap, is having a snap contest to replace President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a May helicopter crash. Raisi was also being groomed to succeed the 85-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as supreme leader, the unelected post that -- as the title suggests -- matters most in the Islamic Republic.

Protests of both despair and conflict in Gaza

Oped, Slavoj Žižek, Published on 30/05/2024

» These are crazy times. Biblical disturbances in nature, such as the repeated torrential rain in Dubai or the mass fish die-off in Vietnam's overheated reservoir, seem to mirror our overheated politics and social environment.

Foreign noses always good for a laugh

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/12/2021

» Today's column is coming from the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum to where I periodically escape for a break from Bangkok. There was a quick reminder that I was no longer in the Big Mango while sitting in a village restaurant with my wife and friends. A Thai lad about 5 years old came up to our table and stared at me for a bit and giggled. I might add this is not an unusual reaction to Crutch in the provinces.

OPINION

Masking selfishness

News, Postbag, Published on 05/03/2020

» Re: "Outrage over mask shortages," (BP, March 3). I can't believe this. People are panicking over the shortage of face masks. In March 3 PostBag, a writer from Pattaya says they're charging 200 baht apiece for them there, and the March 2 editorial laments the shortage.

OPINION

Future backwards

News, Postbag, Published on 30/04/2019

» My impression is that Khun Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit symbolised the hopes and aspirations of many young people in this country. It saddens me that there seems to be a very concerted effort to sideline him and therefore nullify the votes of a lot of young, idealistic and optimistic people.

Cops have licence to print money

News, Postbag, Published on 24/06/2018

» I believe the Royal Thai Police (RTP) in Chiang Mai and other areas have been handed a golden money-making opportunity.
