» A half-hearted spring-cleaning session at home during the week came to a welcome halt when I unearthed a couple of my father's wartime RAF books under a pile of disintegrating paperbacks. The Air Ministry books, published more than 80 years ago, always serve as a reminder of when as a kid I made a faux pas of embarrassing proportions.

» To mark National Elephant Day -- which is celebrated every year on March 13 -- the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has rolled out a conservation plan to protect elephants. The highlight of this year's celebrations was a scheme by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to develop "training centres" to tame "angry elephants", according to Attapon Charoenchansa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

» Russian troops are stalled for the third week outside most of the major cities of eastern and central Ukraine, but they have failed to surround and cut off any of them except Mariupol, the big port on the Black Sea that has become the Ukrainian "Stalingrad". Indeed, Ukrainian counter-attacks are driving the Russians back some distance in a few places.
