Oped, Robert Lempert, Published on 11/11/2025

» I am a policy analyst. My job is to provide expert information to decision makers and the public to help improve public policy. This job, always hard, has become harder.

Donald Trump buys time with weapons for Kyiv

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 18/07/2025

» There was rejoicing when US President Donald Trump announced that he was going to let Ukraine have weapons after all, but it was conspicuously contained joy. Half-smiles and sighs of relief were plentiful; cheers were absent or faked.

Today, Tuvalu. Tomorrow, the entire world

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 15/07/2025

» Some big changes arrive with a bang, but usually they sort of sneak in and you barely notice them at first. Last month's big change saw the creation of the world's first climate-change visas. It's a way of giving potential climate refugees some hope and some dignity, and it would certainly be an improvement on the current migration mess.

Thailand at intelligence crossroads

Oped, Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, Published on 23/06/2025

» As the United States and China pour vast investments into artificial intelligence, we stand on the brink of a power shift more profound than the atomic age--one where machines, not humans, may soon drive the pace of progress. Oped, Pasinee Rerkpiboon and Phumjit Sri-Udomkajorn, Published on 18/06/2025

India and Pakistan edge closer to war

Oped, John J Metzler, Published on 08/05/2025

» Yesterday, India launched strikes on Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir, two weeks after a terrorist attack. The situation follows a long-smouldering fuse which has reignited in the wake of the terrible terrorist attack killing 27 tourists in a region of disputed Kashmir, part of India's territory. Some 25 Indian civilians were apparently targeted because of their Hindu religion.

Trump-era elections in the Anglosphere

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 23/04/2025

» The dictionary defines a "horse whisperer" as "someone who is skilled at training horses using gentle, non-violent methods based on understanding horse behaviour and psychology". By that standard, the only "Trump-whisperer" in Europe is Vladimir Putin (although Hungary's Viktor Orbán and Italy's Giorgia Meloni might get bit parts in the movie).

OPINION

Trump trade détente chance?

Oped, Stephen Jen, Published on 26/03/2025

» Many investors went into 2025 assuming Donald Trump would use tariffs as a negotiating tool, but this belief has been shaken in recent weeks, generating significant market angst. But Mr Trump's fiscal strategy may yet lead to a benign outcome for the global economy.

The slide back to war: Kagame and Trump

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 29/01/2025

» We seem to be drifting back into the world of "Might Makes Right". That would be a bad place to be.

Oped, JOE MATHEWS, Published on 18/01/2025

» If you're going to live the California dream, you'll never escape the nightmares.
