What if you take away the slingshot?

Oped, Sally Tyler, Published on 05/01/2026

» The latest ceasefire in the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is welcome news and hopefully signals an end to the displacement of thousands and tragic loss of life on both sides. The release of 18 Cambodian prisoners is an indication that the parties are delving more deeply into the process to resolve the conflict.

The utility of neutrality, now in steep decline

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 02/03/2024

» Neutrality used to be a European thing, but it is now in steep decline. If it were an animal, we'd have to declare it an endangered species.

Stamping out gun crime

Oped, Editorial, Published on 05/10/2023

» The shooting at a luxury department store in the centre of Bangkok on Tuesday has shed light on "blank guns" -- recreational guns that have become popular weapons here. Gun loopholes need plugging

Oped, Editorial, Published on 18/10/2022

» The government appears to be serious about controlling gun ownership and cracking down on illicit drug trafficking in the aftermath of the recent massacre at a childcare centre in Nong Bua Lam Phu province, where a total of 36 people, mostly pre-school children, were killed by a former police officer. The measures prescribed last week following a cabinet meeting attended by related ministries, however, regrettably left one crucial element off the table -- the major source of the guns on sale on the market.

Case for lese majeste

Oped, Postbag, Published on 27/03/2021

» I agree with Burin Kantabutra in his March 25 letter "Show some respect", that in order to minimise the damage from the excessive and unreasonable use of Section 112 of the Criminal Code (lese majeste), the approval of the Privy Council should be obtained before the government charges anybody with it.

Afghanistan: The same old sell-out

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 12/03/2021

» In an letter to Afghan President Ashraf Ghani last weekend, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken insisted that Mr Ghani agree to share power with the Taliban insurgents in a transitional government, to be followed at some point by some sort of election. Understandably, the Afghan leader views this as a shotgun marriage in which the Taliban will hold the shotgun.
