Oped, Postbag, Published on 17/09/2025

» Re: "Setting a short-term target", (Business, Sept 15) & "Govt's ambitious land bridge project puts residents at risk", (BP, Aug 29). The Kra Canal or Land Bridge project is in the spotlight once again. » The Asia-Pacific region has been plagued by large-scale natural catastrophes and consequent financial damage in recent years, with total economic losses reaching US$50bn (1.8tn baht) last year according to Munich Re's NatCat (Natural Catastrophes) Service Annual report. Yet, just approximately 17% (US$8.4bn) of those losses were insured, highlighting the large protection gap in this part of the world.

MPs cause of pension bloat

Oped, Editorial, Published on 08/06/2022

» Opposition Move Forward Party leader Pita Limjaroenrat last week slammed the government for allocating 300 billion baht — the greatest single expense — of the 2023 budget bill to pension payments for retired civil servants. He said 40% of all state borrowing and taxes collected will be used to fund the ballooning pensions payouts rather than development schemes and labelled the bill for the forthcoming fiscal year the “ill elephant” budget.

Oped, Kamphol Pantakua, Published on 10/02/2021

» Ask any Thai rice farmer to describe government assistance when they are hit with natural disasters. Their answers will most likely be the same: Too little, too late.
