More missiles, memes, and the new resistance

News, Imran Khalid, Published on 19/07/2025

» There was a time, not so long ago, when Walter Cronkite's sombre baritone could turn battlefield dispatches into moments of collective reckoning. Even the first "television war" of 1991, piped in grainy bursts from Baghdad, felt slow enough for shock to sink in. These days, the missiles that streak above Natanz or Esfahan arrive on TikTok between latte art tutorials and kittens sliding off sofas. The effect is less shock-and-awe, more scroll-and-shrug.

The doctor who became a wrap star

News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 10/05/2020

» It will come as no surprise that I know absolutely nothing about fashion. However I have been impressed by the stylish scarves warn by Doctor Deborah Birx in those White House coronavirus briefings. Whether draped over her shoulders like a wrap, or tied around her neck, the silk scarves are really quite attractive and look particularly suited to this elegant lady. Dr Birx's appearances have apparently prompted a considerable boost in sales of these upmarket scarves, especially the Hermes variety frequently worn by the doctor.

Mudslinging moves online

News, Mongkol Bangprapa and Aekarach Sattaburuth, Published on 24/02/2019

» Reflecting the fierce competition in the run-up to the March 24 election, political parties are already using creative and dirty tactics to win the MP seats. While campaign poster vandalism is still as prevalent as in every past election, online mudslinging now appears to be far fiercer -- a matter of concern to both parties and the election regulator.
