Blind to the truth

Oped, Postbag, Published on 19/02/2026

» Re: "DLT to allow online licence renewals", (BP, Feb 17).

OPINION

Peace on Earth? Democracy everywhere?

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 29/12/2025

» Democracy is in retreat or at least on the defensive almost everywhere, while wars are getting bigger and more frequent. The trend lines are frighteningly bad.

Jane Goodall and the chimp wars

News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 11/10/2025

» Jane Goodall died last week, still on the road at the age of 91 and still advocating for biodiversity in general and the welfare of chimpanzees in particular. She was a hero to me and millions of others for her courage, her wisdom and her compassion. She was also one of the greatest self-taught scientists in history.

Monastic discipline in the digital age

Oped, Watcharin Ariyaprakai, Published on 23/07/2025

» At a time when Thai society is reeling from scandals in the monastic community -- from leaked audio clips of money transfers via apps to secret relationships with women -- we are not merely shocked that "monks have done wrong", but rather at how swiftly the "image of purity" we've long upheld has collapsed.

Why China's marriage crisis really matters

Oped, Yi Fuxian, Published on 04/04/2025

» New marriages in China reportedly plummeted by one-fifth last year, implying that the official number of births will likely fall from 9.54 million in 2024 to 7.3- 7.8 million in 2025. Thus, while China represents 17.2% of the global population, it will account for less than 6% of births -- comparable to Nigeria.

OPINION

Shared values for human rights

Oped, Darkey Africa and Bhanubhatra Jittiang, Published on 21/03/2025

» Twenty-twenty-five is a notably very historic year for the growing bilateral relations between South Africa and Thailand, with the Mandela Centre at Chulalongkorn University clocking a year since its establishment.

OPINION

War: two steps forward, two steps back?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 13/02/2025

» In classical civilisations, there was a continuing, unresolved debate about whether history moved forward or just went around in circles: was it linear or was it cyclical? But that debate was largely settled once human beings learned about their deeper past. It's linear.

Why I yelled at the TV during Harris's speech

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 28/08/2024

» When you find yourself shouting at the TV, you know it's time to take a break. I reached that point last week, watching Kamala Harris's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention, and what I yelled at the screen was, "The enemy is us!"

OPINION

Embrace fair play

Oped, Postbag, Published on 06/08/2024

» Re: "Gender woes in sports", (PostBag, Aug 4). Miro King, in support of real women, is right to be upset about the Olympic boxing matches. There seems to be unfairness in the match between Angela Carini and Imane Khelif, who was born a woman, albeit with male-genetic XY chromosomes.

OPINION

Fishy solutions

Oped, Postbag, Published on 23/07/2024

» Re: “Govt seeks source of alien fish influx”, (BP, July 21). It was with incredulity that I read, “Govt seeks source of alien fish influx”. The source will never be found of course, since a predatory bird could have dropped a pregnant tilapia from high in the air — any newly formed body of freshwater in Thailand will soon be populated with fish in just this manner.
