Farewells teach us all to live for the moment

Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 01/07/2022

» When we bid farewell to something, it marks the end of a relationship. Saying it gives us a sense of ending. Saying goodbye reminds us of how vulnerable and uncertain our life is.

Nan proves villages have the answers

News, Prasarn Marukpitak, Published on 23/05/2022

» For those in the provinces, having greater say in the key issues of local administration remains a distant dream. For instance, they cannot vote for their governors, as is done in Bangkok.

Born to love noise

News, Postbag, Published on 04/06/2019

» Daniel Reid in his June 3 letter, "Kill noise monsters", is right. There is a department to deal with noise pollution. I found this office at the Bangkok City Hall about 15 or so years ago, tucked away in a corner, staffed by 10 people, all who were playing computer games when I walked in. I was there to file a noise complaint. None of the staff knew where to find the complaint forms to fill in. When a form was eventually produced, there was little enthusiasm for anyone to listen or help out. I finally went outside to find "someone in authority" to light a fire under these people. At least I got the ball rolling after a few hours that should have taken a few minutes.

News, John Lloyd, Published on 24/12/2018

» Christmas is invariably the time for a grouch that neither Christ nor mas(s) feature much in a festival meant to rededicate Christian believers to the worship of the son of God. Materialism, especially for children, swamps, on this view, any reflection on the meaning of a Christian -- or religious -- life.

Putin struggles to keep wars separate

News, Leonid Bershidsky, Published on 16/02/2018

» Late on Feb 7 and early on Feb 8, US forces in Syria likely killed the greatest number of Russians since the end of the Cold War -- more than 200 soldiers. There will, however, be no international repercussions, nor will any of the Russians get posthumous medals like Roman Filipov, the fighter pilot who was shot down over Syria earlier this year and resisted capture until he was forced to blow himself up with a hand grenade.
