OPINION

Narrative challenged

Oped, Postbag, Published on 11/12/2025

» Re: "Thailand's delicate stance with Israel", (Opinion, Dec 9). As a Jew living in Thailand for over 20 years, I must admit I was not happy with what I read. Indeed, found a number of statements to be offensive: The second paragraph implies that Israel's response to the terrorist attack on Oct 7, 2023, was "genocide" -- a term coined in 1944 to describe Hitler's campaign to exterminate all European Jews, and defined as "the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group".

OPINION

Southern scars

Oped, Postbag, Published on 18/10/2025

» Re: "Beneath Tak Bai's calm, scars remain", (Opinion, Oct 15). The Bangkok Post deserves praise for having columnist Kong Rithdee remind the nation of the scars and injustices experienced in the South during the Thaksin regime under Gen Pisal Wattanawongkrit, the Fourth Army regional commander in 2004. He also wrote about notorious cases of impunity and the rise of southern youth in joining secessionist groups.

OPINION

Give Trump's Gaza peace plan a chance

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 08/10/2025

» When a bad man does a good thing, we should honour him for it, even if his motives are selfish.

OPINION

Here's a taste of things to come in the US

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 02/10/2025

» 'Predictions are hard, especially about the future' (Danish proverb), but still we make them, especially when we care about the future. Here are some about the future of the United States in the next three and a bit years, expressed as probabilities, although you should not trust the numbers.

OPINION

Israel's Gaza campaign is making it a pariah state

Oped, Thomas L Friedman, Published on 03/09/2025

» I will leave it to historians to debate whether Israel is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. But what is absolutely clear to me right now is that this Israeli government is committing suicide, homicide and fratricide.

OPINION

Unfair on parents

Oped, Postbag, Published on 18/08/2025

» Re: "Grade rage rises", (PostBag, Aug 15), "Probe sought into pupil attack on teacher", (BP, Aug, 13) & InBrief, "Defamation" (BP, Aug, 7).

Clock ticks as plastic talks drag on

Oped, Pichmol Rugrod, Published on 13/08/2025

» This week in Geneva, negotiators from around the world are gathered for the fifth session of the Global Plastics Treaty -- known as INC 5.2. It is an intergovernmental process aimed at finding solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. Yet, more than a week in, progress toward a strong and binding agreement remains painfully slow. As the clock ticks, our window to act is rapidly closing.

OPINION

Monastic discipline in the digital age

Oped, Watcharin Ariyaprakai, Published on 23/07/2025

» At a time when Thai society is reeling from scandals in the monastic community -- from leaked audio clips of money transfers via apps to secret relationships with women -- we are not merely shocked that "monks have done wrong", but rather at how swiftly the "image of purity" we've long upheld has collapsed.

OPINION

High rates hurt public healthcare

Oped, Serah Makka and Rosemary Mburu, Published on 14/07/2025

» May's 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) -- the annual meeting of the World Health Organization's member states -- ended on a self-congratulatory note. From an agreement on pandemic preparedness to increases in assessed contributions to the WHO, there were plenty of achievements to tout. But there was an elephant in the room, hiding behind a banner reading "One World for Health": the high borrowing costs faced by African countries.

OPINION

Iran and Trump: Much ado about nothing much

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 27/06/2025

» I don't get a lot of face-time with Donald Trump, but his rant on Tuesday in front of the chopper that was to take him to the airport and on to the Nato summit in Brussels was the first time I heard him say "f***" in front of live microphones -- and it was clearly about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
