US TikTok ban not the right move

Oped, Aaron Glasserman & Monica Greco, Published on 27/03/2024

» On March 13, the United States House of Representatives passed the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. It is no secret that the bill takes aim at TikTok. The massively popular video-sharing platform is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance and is thus subject to the laws of the People's Republic of China and potentially to the control of the Communist Party of China (CPC), despite assurances to the contrary from company executives.

There are solutions for Ashton Asoke

Oped, Ariya Aruninta, Published on 19/08/2023

» The Ashton Asoke Condo saga illustrates how things can go wrong in real estate development projects. For the consumer, it was a nightmare that the Supreme Administrative Court decided earlier this month that the condo which had been built a few years back and sold to them in the end lacked a proper entrance which meant its permit was revoked. For investors, it was a reversal in fortune, not to mention a PR disaster.

Give America a debt brake fast

Oped, R James Breiding, Published on 01/06/2023

» Since 1960, the United States has raised its debt ceiling 78 times -- soon to be 79, if Congress approves the latest last-minute deal. On a wall in Manhattan, not far from Times Square, a billboard-size display has kept a running tally of the national debt amount.

Vote for monarchy

Oped, Postbag, Published on 09/12/2020

» Khun Veera Prateepchaikul in his Dec 7 article makes some excellent arguments in favour of the current monarchical system in Thailand. Historically, many Western countries used to be monarchies but switched to democratic systems because of the misbehaviour of their monarchs. They also had a belief, which may appear absurd to some, that the citizens of any country ought to have the final say in matters concerning their own governance.

A warning from Poland on Trump

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 17/07/2020

» Few people outside of Poland care about the outcome of last Sunday's presidential election there, but maybe they should. Andrzej Duda is practically a Polish clone of Donald Trump, who will also be seeking re-election less than four months from now -- and Mr Duda squeaked out a victory.
