Tariffs top closures

Oped, Postbag, Published on 08/10/2025

» Re: "Making Cambodia pay for border row", (Opinion, Oct 2). As a seasoned economist, Chartchai Parasuk makes a valid point by suggesting that Thailand open its borders with Cambodia. After all, the closed borders are only hurting this nation, economically speaking.

OPINION

A moral exemplar

Oped, Postbag, Published on 03/10/2025

» Re: "Legal eagles voice worries over Thaksin's pardon bid", (BP, Oct 1). Whatever naughtinesses he may have been accused of, it cannot be denied that Thaksin Shinawatra continues to prove a moral exemplar to the nation in at least two areas. The first is that he faithfully follows the traditional example of accumulating the greatest possible sufficiency of extreme wealth; the second is that he entertains as unfailingly as Lisa Manoban herself, albeit with his humorous approach to preached legal norms rather than with her doubtless impressive song and dance routines.

Donald Trump buys time with weapons for Kyiv

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 18/07/2025

» There was rejoicing when US President Donald Trump announced that he was going to let Ukraine have weapons after all, but it was conspicuously contained joy. Half-smiles and sighs of relief were plentiful; cheers were absent or faked.

» Thursday and Friday, Thailand hosts regional representatives in their latest meetings on the Myanmar crisis. Sam Yan shows need to save history

Oped, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal & Settanant Thanakitkoses, Published on 23/05/2024

» What distinguishes Thailand from many other countries is our rich diversity in culture and history. Yet slowly but surely, the distinctive heritage of our local communities is disappearing. Often property developers destroy historic buildings in pursuit of profit. But why do their rights always seem to come first? Why do we have to beg to protect our cultural assets?

OPINION

Politics at the root of world's three famines

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 26/03/2024

» There are three incipient famines in the world today, and politics is at the root of all of them. That's not unusual, actually: famines are almost always political events.

OPINION

Fighting for long-lasting peace

Oped, Orel Pavlo, Published on 17/01/2024

» It has been almost 700 days since Russia started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The brutal war, waged unprovoked against an independent country, has brought devastation, ruin and pain to the Ukrainian people.

Why did they all leave their homes?

Oped, Loi Mork, Published on 24/06/2023

» The campaigns by Myanmar's military government to raid and attack settlements, followed by the burning of houses of civilians and various forms of human rights violations throughout the rural areas in Myanmar, have made the news many times in the past two years. As of information on June 14, according to the Data of Myanmar -- an independent organisation that provides useful "data for the people" in country -- at least 70,324 houses of civilians throughout Myanmar have been burned down by the Tatmadaw or the Myanmar Army.
