Why is everyone becoming so self-righteous?

Oped, Steven Sloman, Published on 18/09/2025

» It feels increasingly difficult nowadays to avoid righteousness; or, worse, self-righteousness. We are constantly being told what to do by those who supposedly have seen the light. For example, I was recently scolded by a colleague for suggesting that my own employer should aim to hire the best people, regardless of their sex or race. I was struck by the confidence that this person felt in instructing me on what I should value; it felt high-handed and uninformed.

The US election and the crisis of whiteness

News, Edoardo Campanella, Published on 28/10/2024

» The "crisis of democracy" across Western countries is generally attributed to rising inequality, the hollowing out of the middle class, and the politics of mass migration. But another major factor is demography, especially in the United States, where the threat to democracy tracks developments affecting white voters. Moreover, since demographic trends cannot be easily reversed, America's growing dysfunction is likely to be a persistent factor in global politics for a long time.

Thailand's cloud dream cut short by its energy policy

Oped, Kongpob Areerat, Published on 06/07/2024

» Despite successfully wooing big tech companies such as Microsoft to invest in a new data centre, Thailand's aspiration to become Southeast Asia's hub for cloud computing might just be a pipe dream. A major hurdle is its outdated energy policy.

How to enforce climate deals with trade measures

Oped, Scott Barrett, Noah Kaufman & Joseph E Stiglitz, Published on 06/02/2024

» Casual observers of the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai (COP28) can be forgiven for attributing high stakes to the event.

Global rate-cut debate unfolding

News, Daniel Moss, Published on 19/01/2024

» From villains to heroes. If there's one theme that has dominated markets in the opening days of the year, it's been breathless speculation about which central bank will cut interest rates first and by how much: It's no longer if but when. There's little doubt that borrowing costs will be lower in many key economies well before the end of 2024. Even the notoriously hawkish Bundesbank is on board.

Local action key to beating authoritarians

Oped, Joe Mathews, Published on 27/09/2022

» Authoritarians do not teleport fully formed into national leadership. They first must learn how to rule anti-democratically, usually at the local level. Stopping authoritarianism globally requires all of us to identify our hometown autocrats, and make sure that local governments are as democratic as possible.

Gorbachev the environmentalist

Oped, Brendan Mackey, Published on 07/09/2022

» Much has been written, and rightly so, about the political impact, significance and legacy of Mikhail Gorbachev (1931-2022). However, in addition to his grand and historic roles in changing the shape of Europe and Russia, and bringing to an end a Cold War that threatened to end in nuclear annihilation and mutually assured destruction, Gorbachev was also an environmentalist.

Ways to beat the helplessness of our condition

Oped, Tobias Bunde, Published on 25/02/2022

» The world is struggling to cope simultaneously with the seemingly endless Covid-19 pandemic, the rise of illiberal forces, the failure of international interventions, rising great-power tensions, and military buildups in key territories. Beyond these immediate concerns, the impact of climate change has become all too tangible -- and political leaders have yet to mount a sufficiently forceful response. Who could be blamed for feeling overwhelmed?
