Humanising the US-China relationship

Oped, Nancy Qian, Published on 10/04/2024

» On a recent trip to China with my Northwestern Kellogg students, we were all struck by how few Americans had returned to the country since the end of its zero-Covid policy in December 2022.

OPINION

To activate hope, activate capital

News, Ben Meng & Anne Simpson, Published on 21/12/2022

» The atmosphere at the end of last month's UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt was rather sobering. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has forced countries to turn to thermal coal and other fossil fuels to meet their energy needs, likely postponing the transition to a net-zero economy. But COP27 also underscored the need to leverage public policy, regulation, and technological innovation to achieve a climate-secure future.

OPINION

Trump is wrongly banking on a new Cold War

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 24/07/2020

» Is there going to be a new Cold War with China? Probably not. Consider the case of Huawei.

OPINION

Huawei shows the lopsided nature of US-China ties

News, Tim Culpan, Published on 11/03/2019

» On March 7, Huawei Technologies Co held a press conference to announce it's suing the US government, arguing that a law passed last year barring the Chinese company's equipment from certain networks is unconstitutional.

Peeling back the layers of 'Xi Jinping Thought'

News, Steve Tsang, Published on 07/02/2019

» In October 2017, at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, the CPC enshrined in its constitution a new political doctrine: Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era. At a time when a rapidly modernising China is a leading global player, it is tempting to dismiss this doctrine as anachronistic "party-speak" from a bygone age. We succumb to that temptation at our peril.

OPINION

Huawei is no mere victim of China tensions

News, Michael Schuman, Published on 31/01/2019

» The US pushed its campaign against Huawei Technologies Co Ltd into hyperdrive on Monday, with the Department of Justice unveiling indictments against the Chinese telecom giant for allegedly violating US sanctions on Iran and pilfering American commercial secrets. Some may see these latest accusations as part of a larger effort by the administration of US President Donald Trump to stifle China's technological rise, as economic relations between the world's two largest economies deteriorate. Huawei, as it has in the past, denied breaking US law.

OPINION

From Carlos-san to Ghosn 'yougisha' (suspect)

News, Cedomir Nestorovic, Published on 16/01/2019

» In the autumn of 2015, Carlos Ghosn more than likely overlooked Japan's National Tax Agency obtaining information on roughly 550,000 overseas accounts as part of increasing scrutiny of wealthy residents. It is quite possible his accounts were amongst this dataset. His lawyers may have realised this, albeit far too late, when Mr Ghosn was arrested on Nov 19 accused of falsifying financial reports in underreporting his income.

OPINION

China is blowing an opportunity with Meng's arrest

News, Hal Brands, Published on 21/12/2018

» China is blowing the geopolitical opportunity of a lifetime. There has probably never been a better moment to undo America's greatest strategic advantage by dividing the US from its global network of democratic allies, many of which are horrified by President Trump's rhetoric and policies and deeply worried about Washington's staying power. Yet, Beijing is doing its best to remind that democratic world that it has far more to fear from a hegemonic China than from an erratic America.

OPINION

Huawei case destined to divide nations

News, Mohamed A El-Erian, Published on 13/12/2018

» The Huawei Technologies case now in the Canadian courts, while a legal matter, illustrates one of the biggest fears of many countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region: facing a binary choice as a result of the increasing tensions between China and the United States.
