How the world can escape the new Gilded Age

News, Daron Acemoglu, Published on 25/10/2024

» Tech billionaires such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk are not just among the richest people in human history. They also are exceptionally powerful -- socially, culturally and politically. While this is partly a reflection of the social status that our society attaches to wealth in general, that is not the whole story.

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 06/02/2024

» Pakistan's former prime minister, former cricket superstar and latter-day populist politician Imran Khan was having a quiet week in jail, six months into his three-year sentence for corruption, and suddenly all hell broke loose.

How are Thais spending so much now?

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 01/12/2022

» Third-quarter GDP growth for 2022 (Q3/2022) is 4.5% -- substantially higher than the expected 4%. The main driving factor is robust private consumption -- not tourism income -- which expanded 9% in real terms and 15.7% in nominal terms, compared to the same quarter last year. On the surface, this high growth phenomenon may look normal as most Asean countries have enjoyed similar benefits of low Covid infections and pent-up demand. For instance, Malaysia's private consumption also expanded 15.7% in the same third quarter.

News, Atiya Achakulwisut, Published on 25/08/2020

» It looks as if the government is concerned that the latest bout of protests will die down too soon. Otherwise, why would it have sent in submarines to stir things up?

OPINION

Tip of the iceberg

Oped, Postbag, Published on 05/08/2020

» The army general prime minister is trying to reinstate the Bull Boss case. One can assume the motivation is to manage public perceptions, since saving face is the be-all and end-all of government policy.

Irrational sentence

News, Postbag, Published on 21/02/2020

» "A former abbot of Wat Sa Ket (Golden Mount) was sentenced to a suspended jail term of 36 months and fined 27,000 baht for embezzlement of 69.7 million baht in temple funds", read your online report concerning the politely termed "malfeasance" of a senior monk and a bunch of criminals from the National Office of Buddhism.
