What went so wrong in Latin America?

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 18/10/2025

» Javier Milei, the Elon Musk wannabe who became president of Argentina two years ago, chainsaw in hand, is now in deep trouble with the voters, and the mid-term elections are due this month. He has the same political agenda as Donald Trump, give or take a folly or two, so he asked his populist big brother for help, and Mr Trump delivered.

2024 financial crisis may be a silent one

Oped, Chartchai Parasuk, Published on 04/04/2024

» When an economy faces a financial crisis, it can create a big bang like the mass collapse of financial institutions such as during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the Thai Tum Yum Kung crisis of 1997, the Japanese financial crisis in late 1997, and the US Hamburger crisis of 2008.

Oped, Editorial, Published on 31/01/2023

» The Royal Thai Police's (RTP) record on corruption and misconduct is at an all-time low. It's reached the point where there's not a month or perhaps a week that goes by without news of RTP shenanigans.

Destroying old education paradigms

Oped, Sara Samiphak, Published on 08/12/2022

» A shift in thinking is required for education to move forward. According to Thomas Kuhn, a paradigm shift required for scientific progress is much more about destroying the old paradigm, or the accepted mode of thought, than it is about creating a new one.

OPINION

Don't be a bystander to mass famine

Oped, Peter Singer, Published on 16/08/2022

» In March 1964, The New York Times reported that 38 witnesses saw or heard a brutal, drawn-out, and ultimately fatal attack on a woman called Kitty Genovese, but none did anything to help her or even summoned the police. The report was later shown to be erroneous, but the "bystander effect" is real. As many psychology experiments have shown, an individual is less likely to come to the aid of another if they can see that other people who could help are not doing so.
