Marking time at the COP30 climate summit

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 12/11/2025

» Populist parties are already in power in some developed countries and waiting just outside the door in many more. The key trick of populist politicians is to tell the voters what they want to hear, and the voters definitely do not want their lives to be disrupted by global heating, so they are told it is not happening. It's "the world's biggest con", in Donald Trump's words.

Bet on trouble

» Re: "Senate shoots down casino bill", (BP, Sept 24). I note that in your article, Senator Vichaya Suwannaprom cites Sydney, Australia, and its casino access policies as a potential model for Thailand. As an avid reader currently residing in Sydney, I would be remiss if I did not make the following observations about our two casinos.

Iran and Trump: Much ado about nothing much

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 27/06/2025

» I don't get a lot of face-time with Donald Trump, but his rant on Tuesday in front of the chopper that was to take him to the airport and on to the Nato summit in Brussels was the first time I heard him say "f***" in front of live microphones -- and it was clearly about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

South Asian nuclear war would hit globe

Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 01/05/2025

» India and Pakistan have had several shooting matches since they carried out a total of nine underground nuclear weapons tests in 1998. However, they don't make Putin-style thinly veiled threats to use their nukes (around 170 nuclear warheads each at the moment), and they do understand that escalation from smaller, "conventional" wars is the real danger.
