» A half-hearted spring-cleaning session at home during the week came to a welcome halt when I unearthed a couple of my father's wartime RAF books under a pile of disintegrating paperbacks. The Air Ministry books, published more than 80 years ago, always serve as a reminder of when as a kid I made a faux pas of embarrassing proportions.

» A passenger on a flight TG652 had to ask crew members twice for a sandwich and Coke after waking up from a short sleep which made him miss the inflight service. When one of the attendants handed him the snack, he asked her again for Coke. The cabin staff looked annoyed and told him that he should have told her from the beginning that he wanted both so that she could have done it in one trip instead of two.

» Qantas, the Australian airline, has just test-flown the world’s longest commercial air-route: 16,500km from New York to Sydney non-stop. There were only 60 passengers aboard the Boeing 787, all in business class, because the plane needed to conserve the rest of its weight for fuel. And, we are told, they danced the Macarena in the empty economy class to stay limber during the 19-hour flight.
