» Bon Chol Chhnam Thmei, or Khmer New Year as it is most commonly known, which this year falls on April 14-16, is one of the most auspicious holidays on the Cambodian calendar. Officially representing the end of the harvest season, and the start of the new year, the festival brings together families and communities to celebrate and welcome in new beginnings. Whilst Covid-19 precautions dictate that large-scale celebrations have been cancelled; it is expected that many families will still host intimate gatherings at home to signify this occasion.

His family's wealth is astounding: it is estimated between US$500 million and US$1 billion (16-32 billion baht) -- a far cry from his prime ministerial salary of US$1,100 per month.

» Following years of condemnation by human rights groups, and periodic criticism by a range of governments across the world, 22 mostly European and Western nations on July 8 co-signed a letter to the United Nations Human Rights Council regarding China's ill-treatment of its Uighur population and other Muslim and minority communities in Xinjiang province.

Refugee status must be respected

News, Evan Jones, Published on 23/05/2019

» On May 10, Thai activist Praphan Pipithnamporn was extradited from Malaysia to Thailand, arriving home to face charges of sedition in accordance with the draconian Section 116. This forcible repatriation by Malaysian authorities occurred despite Ms Praphan having already registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and subsequently being determined to be a "person of concern". Such actions by Malaysia must be considered nothing short of refoulement -- returning someone to a country where they are likely to be subject to persecution.
