Why digital tagging can be both a gift and a curse

Database, James Hein, Published on 22/12/2010

» Long time readers will know that I support the idea of Google Maps, Google Earth and even Street View. There are a myriad of excellent uses that such technologies can be out to. Like most tools, they can be used in different ways, especially if they are combined with other technologies.

    A new dawn?

    Database, Published on 15/09/2010

» Steve "President for Life" Jobs took the wraps off three new evolutions of his Apple iPod babies; the new iPod Shuffle got buttons again, the new and even smaller Nano has a screen at last but can no longer play video, and the iPod Touch gained most of the features already on the iPhone 4. Apple released the new iTunes Ver 10 software, which killed off the rumours that it would be a spiffy, all-new version; Ver 10 has a feature called Ping, which allows you to see what your friends are listening to and vice-versa, if you want.

    Maneaters

Learningpost, David Canavan, Published on 01/06/2010

» There are places we can go on this planet where we are not the dominant species or top predator, places where only brave men dare to venture and places where humans actually, and actively, get preyed upon. To be eaten alive, I think, would be the worst way to die, yet it happens to people every year, eaten alive by a few select animals. Let me introduce you to the maneaters.

A man and his Motor Mouse

Brunch, Andrew Biggs, Published on 14/03/2010

» Imagine my surprise last week when a mouse stuck its head out of my car air-conditioner. It was late at night in the car park of Channel 3. It seems this little mouse had made a home in my car for more than a few days, which would explain the scuffling and shuffling heard on and off by yours truly this past week. Thank goodness it was a mouse and not the onset of schizophrenia.

Mercedes killer Honda girl Red Bull heir

» Well, sometimes the rich and famous due get locked up. http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews ... rs-in-jail

    • foreign_observer commented : Although this is a bit of an old thread now, I still find it incredibly amusing that some people have initially assumed that this guy will even see the inside of a jail room - albeit a limited period of time. You have to understand what is actually at stake here. One of the worst, possible loss of face to any Thai 'Clan leader' is having a member of your clan spending time in jail as a result of a sentence handed down by the judge - regardless of what he or she did (The absolute worst loss of face is losing all your inherited wealth and having to downgrade your social status). To the Thai people, being convicted of a crime is not that big of a deal, because nobody cares whether you committed the crime or not. Thai people are very forgiving/apathetic that way. However, being in jail, is an ENTIRELY different story. Getting the sentence reduced, to a few months, weeks or even days, is not good enough. To understand this, you have to put yourself in the Clan Leader's shoes. Just think what your golf buddies or business partners will say at the next round of tee off if you fail to keep your charge out of jail. They'll say: "oh look at him, he can't even keep his son/daughter/cousin/brother/sister/nephew/grandson etc etc out of jail despite his position of power. May be he's too selfish to pull strings to help even his own flesh and blood. May be he's out of favor with The Man and no longer has the 'MoJo'. May be we shouldn't hang out with him anymore because he' probably won't be able to help us if we get in trouble for accidentally killing someone, because you know, accidents happen all the time". Gosh, how embarrassing and damaging would that be to your reputation?? Clearly, the Clan Leader must keep his charges out of jail - no question about it. A reduced sentence is not good enough. How can this be done? Remember that the Thais are masters of twisting facts around. Even though a sentence has been passed, it is the job of the police to see to it that he goes to jail. The police might then come out and say something along the line of 'Oh, but we don't know where to find him, he hasn't shown up at prison like he was supposed to... so there'. And that will be the end of it. I would encourage you to read 'Sri Thanonchai' chronicles - it offers a very interesting insight into the Thai culture and justice. Actually, for a more contemporary example, you can even look at the PAD seizure of various places last year and how the authorities came up with all sorts of excuse to not arrest them / throw them in jail. Now that, was a prime example of the Sri Thanonchai culture at work. In all honesty, the only reason why this case was allowed to get this far is because the media (ah, those pesky media and their constant search for the next big headline!) has shone too much spotlight on it. The 10 year sentence (originally 15) is excessive - agreed, but it was designed to make it appear that the court is not under the influence of the Clan - thereby demonstrating to the general public that the sacred Thai legal system is 'preserved'. However, this is just about as far as it goes for the circus show in my opinion because at the end of the day, the police will not force him to serve his sentence. What will most likely happen is that he will continue to walk free and drive his Mercedes around Bangkok, though the Clan leader would very likely institute a domestic version of a 'house arrest', which involves putting up a curfew, limiting pocket money etc etc. If the curfew is repeatedly broken, then he may be exiled to the UK or (gasp) some mid west state in the US - which by the way is the absolute WORST thing that can happen to any young Thai Socialite! The threat itself should keep him relatively calm until he finally grows out of this 'I must crash my car into people' phase. The fact that he hasn't killed anyone lately, shows that it is working! You see, the Thai's have a way of resolving things... Compensation to the vics' family are peanuts indeed from a Western perspective. But the truth is that life is truly cheap around this part of the world, just like food here is cheap. So three humans really are worth a lot less than the inflated cost of a high-end Mercedes (keep in mind you have to pay triple digit import tax for cars in Thailand - although there's no tax on human lives). Nonetheless, I would say that the compensation that was paid out to the vic's family is fairly decent by Thai standard and these victims will, in the end, be thankful that they've even gotten anything out of this. Also, the Thai public will eventually forget about the case, or blame the outcome on some karmic forces at work; for example - the victims must have done something wrong in their past life for this to happen to them. See, problem solved. Case closed.

Farang and their seemingly paradoxical ways

By Mr. Surin Province, Created on: 17/10/2008, Last updated on: 17/04/2010

» As a long-historied Farang resident myself, comfortable and understanding, I have to ask the age old question regarding Westerners that find it necessary to stay/live here while finding life so objectionable in many ways. Why is this so? I've experienced this throughout Asia {in particular the LOS}...

    • taysahai commented : [quote="Eggmeng":172gwzk6] I think K**g Narai did what he had to do to keep the Europeans happy at that stage in Siam's history. He probably didn't have a whole lot of choice. I would not venture to say how this reflects on his character. But assuredly there were a lot of people who were unhappy about how a relatively select few enriched themselves by cooperating with the Europeans who were raping the land and the people (often literally in some cases). As a foreigner there was perhaps less sympathy for Phaulkon than for others. That would stand to reason. But he was executed I think, largely for his perceived crimes. [/quote:172gwzk6] That was a rough time in Thailand's history. King Narai was portrayed to have brought solidarity and progress to the Thai Kingdom. Before his rule their was a power struggle for titles, posts, and even for the throne between royalty. He brought peace by excluding royalty from posts within his government, and bringing in close friends from all castes and gender to govern. The exclusion of elitists is what killed Falcon. That would be interesting to see the movie, whether Falcon would be portrayed as the greedy foreign spokesman of french influence over the Throne in an effort to conquer Thailand, or as the humble grecian who befriended Narai through acquaintance of a thai diplomat who was shipwrecked at the same time as Falcon, and who's role in the government was at Narai's request, managing the foreign trade accounts, organizing foreign ships port of call, and the head foreman of palaces in Lopburi. Knowing the old world xenophobia of Thailand, which still exists today, and knowing the unarguable facts about Narai's life, I believe Falcon was a good man. It is ironic that the recorded history in thailand by the Royal Ensign portrays Falcon as a good man completely deserving his title from Narai the great, while history recorded outside of Thailand contradicts. It is ironic because of Thailand's known xenophobia towards foreigners, this would seem like an easy way to discredit this Falang, but instead, it is Foreigners discrediting Foreigners. You might notice I am very interested in this period of history, taking the enormous amount of time to translate documents filled with Rachasap (royal vocabulary), so I am interested to see a third party perspective, and I will look for the book you recommend. We both know that because the history pertains to royalty, the history will be lacking anything of negative substance, but also you have to consider ulterior motives possibly of the British to discredit French influence.

RE: My Mom doesn't Like Farangs

By Anonymous, Created on: 07/12/2004, Last updated on: 19/09/2007

» Your mom is right baby. Most farangs could'nt be entrusted. They consider your country as a backyard brothel that should yield to all their queer demands and nature. They look for cheap sex and free service. Sex that act on the woman as if she were a sex tool that responds automatically without resistance....

    • Anonymous commented : Thai marriage is to marry the girl and her mother. This 'mother' is always problem to keep and raise good family, especially foreign husband and thai girls. Thai mothers nver encourage her daughters to keep good long marriage and raise children, when the old woman dislike farang son in law, she endlessly press down the unimpressive girl to divorce and find new man, rich and ready to feed girl's family. Thai people have no family value and children especially girls, are regarded SOMBAT of parents (sombat is property) and they freely sell and buy through 4 - 5 repeating marriages). So most of Thai husbands, failed, go and kill the girl's mother, the mother in law, first hand when betrayed. This homicidal reports are up every day on thai dailies, Matichon, Khom Chat Neuk, Daily News, Kho Sot, and so on. Be careful farang Man !!! (farang husbands are also frequently killed here, it is the matter of money and conspiracy of "Mother in law".
