The comments were followed by much derision, but anyone who has used Macs for even a short while will know that the temperatures rise, the fans speed up and the system begins to sag like my mother's chocolate cake.

» When Steve Jobs was CEO of Apple he was often right, but there were times when he was wrong. At the 2007 introduction of the iPhone, he was dismissive of the stylus used with many phones. He also later dismissed the idea of a smaller tablet computer, although this may have been to put some off the scent. Jobs said that the finger was the best pointing device for touch-screen input.

Apple's 'Spring Forward' could be a leap ahead

» Apple sent out invitations for a "Spring Forward" event, which will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco on March 9. Some sources are already reporting that a white structure is being built alongside the Center, similar to the one constructed at the Flint Center for the announcement of the Apple Watch last September.

» It is another new year and I expect there will be many new Mac and iPad and iPhone owners. It is also prediction time again. I do not join this game, nor the one in which Apple is told what it must do. Note that after insisting on a larger iPhone (there are two now of course) some say that Cupertino must produce a smaller one, with a 4-inch screen.

» Eight years ago this week I was in San Francisco for the announcement of the iPhone by Steve Jobs. I still use my notes from that day (and video of the presentation) when teaching students. One of the most exciting points of the keynote speech was the realisation — there was a ripple through the audience — that the touchscreen iPod, the mobile phone and the breakthrough internet device were not three products, but a single device. Few appreciated then the effect that the last of these — the internet device — was to have.

» Last week in Cupertino, Tim Cook along with Craig Federighi and Phil Schiller introduced some more new products which were more along the lines of a logical evolution rather than major surprises. Nonetheless, eyebrows were raised a little, especially by a new iMac.

iPad Air 2 - arrival and news

» It has been a busy two weeks at eXtensions. Last Thursday the iPhone 6; this Friday the iPad Air 2. This week I have a massive dent in my credit card, but I did finish writing my A-Z of System Preferences in OS X 10.10, Yosemite. » Later this week, local users will be able to start ordering iPhone 6 models, although it is rumoured that initially those in some iStudio outlets will only have True Sim cards. I will wait until I can physically hold the two models before making a decision and then order from the online Apple Store. My iPhone 5s is fine for now.
